2018 PRCA Media Guide - PRCA Awards

Remuda Awards The PRCA’s annual Remuda Awards go to the stock contracting firm and rodeo committee that provide the best, most consistent pen of bucking horses, creating the best opportunities for contestants to score well. In 2017, the Remuda Award for best pen of bucking horses brought to PRCA rodeos went to Korkow Rodeo, and the committee recognized for assembling the best pen of bucking horses was the Horse Heaven Round-Up in Kennewick, Wash. Winning the Remuda Award is something that’s truly special to Jim Korkow and his family. T.J., Jim’s son, also plays a key role in the family’s stock contracting business. “This (Remuda Award) is one a guy strives for,” Jim Korkow said. “My father (Erv Korkow) started breeding bucking horses in the 1950s, so this is a product of that. There’s very few people that rodeo where it’s their only business, but for us, rodeo is our only business. Jim Korkow said most of the company’s mares have been to the National Finals Rodeo once in their career and these colts are eighth and ninth generation of bucking horse bloodlines. “The result of that kind of program are things like the Remuda Award. Cowboys realize when they come to our rodeos they are going to get on something that is going to buck and if they do their part, they can get a check.”

The rodeo that saw the biggest growth out of all PRCA rodeos from 2016 to 2017 is the latest recipient of the Remuda Award – the Horse Heaven Round-Up. Its committee purse increased from $76,000 to $160,000 and the total prize money increased by $98,288. In 2016, the Kennewick, Wash., rodeo totaled $145,048 and one year later the prize was upped to $243,336 – placing it in the Top 25 for total payouts in 2017. “Sponsorships are a big part of our program,” said Lori Lancaster, executive director of the rodeo. “We had a robust program for the size of our event to start with and it just meant going out and hustling a bit harder to increase it. People here are big fans of the rodeo and they’ve seen the changes here with the facility and everything we’ve invested, and they really wanted to get behind us.”
