AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year (continued) Team Roping (heading)

Clint, 11, is a horse who can be ridden in long and short scores. Masters bought the sorrel gelding when he was 4 years old, and began rodeoing with him when he was 8. Although it took Masters a while to get Clint seasoned, eventually the athletic horse blossomed into an impressive head horse that surfaced in AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year voting. Clint’s first recognition came in 2015, when he finished third in the Horse of the Year results. “The group of horses that are in there – for mine to do good means a lot to me,” Masters said. “When I bought him, he was a tie-down roping horse. I tried to change him for probably two or three years and then finally realized he just has his own style, and that I would ride him the way he is. I’ve learned a lot from the way he moves and turns off, and that’s a good thing.” The Longs struck gold when they purchased Colonel seven years ago from Dixon Flowers Rope Horses in Oklahoma. They bought the hefty gelding when he was 6, and ever since the heel horse has won AQHA/ PRCA Horse of the Year twice (2016-17). He has helped Jake Long get to four Wrangler NFRs; Long competed on Colonel in Las Vegas for a fifth time this year. Jake Long said the best thing about Colonel is that he works in every setup. “It means a lot to me and my family – any time people recognize your animal with something like this (Horse of the Year), it makes you feel good,” he said. “I can ride Colonel anywhere, from Salinas to the (Thomas & Mack Center) at the NFR. He has never cost me money, and it’s never his fault. The cool thing about him is that he really likes to go. Whenever I have him home and try and let him rest, it upsets him. He gets a lot more personable and friendly when he gets to go to rodeos.”
