2018 Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping Announcers

Charlie Throckmorton Charlie Throckmorton has announced the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping for a record-18 consecutive times, and 19 overall. In fact, as a 32-year member of the PRCA, he is acknowledged as a repository of knowledge even among fellow Gold Card members. Throckmorton has witnessed first-hand some historic events in the steer roping event, such as the 1990 down-to-the-wire race between Phil Lyne and Guy Allen as well as Allen breaking Jim Shoulders’ record for number of world titles and then Trevor Brazile breaking Allen’s record. Throckmorton has seen all of the records set in steer roping at the NFSR such as most money won, the arena’s fastest times, fastest average times during his 18-year tenure at the NFSR.

Throckmorton announced the closest world championship race in ProRodeo history when, in 2005’s Round 10, Scott Snedecor won the world title by a margin of $1.67 over Allen.Throckmorton remembers,“You could hear a pin drop in that 10th round, and everyone was standing.” Throckmorton has worked the NFSR in Guthrie, Okla.; Amarillo, Texas; Hobbs, N.M.; and nowMulvane, Kan. “There is not much I haven’t seen in steer roping throughout the last 32-plus years,”saysThrockmorton, who considers single-steer roping the original event of rodeo.“It’s an event where you can’t rush things; you have to let things happen. It takes a lot of talent, precision, a great horse, perseverance, and the will to win. I feel fortunate to have witnessed somany exciting runs and title races among the very best cowboys.”

Jody Carper In 2018, PRCA announcer Jody Carper took the mic next to Throckmorton for the fourth time (he also announced at the ClemMcSpadden National Finals Steer Roping in 2008, 2014-15). “It’s a really good event and I’mhappy to be a part of it,”Carper said.“When you combine the Top 15 in the world at a great facility and with a great crowd, it’s got to be a dynamic that’s exciting a fun.” Carper joined the PRCA in 1997 and also has experience as a PRCA contestant. Before he held his card as an announcer, he competed in calf roping for several years. During his spring run, he met his future wife Kelli. In 2003, he wrapped up his tie-down roping career with a California Circuit finals qualification and then shifted his focus to obtaining a PRCA announcer card. Jody and Kelli have been married since 2005 and reside in Jamul, Calif.; Jody announces full-time at rodeos throughout the U.S. and Canada. The 46-year-old said entertaining the crowd is his favorite aspect of his job.

“I want to see them smile, laugh and have a good time,” he said. “I like to engage the audience with different surveys and ask them different questions. When they loosen up and have fun, I have fun.”
