JUSTIN COMMITTEEMAN OF THE YEAR

Justin Boots, in recognizing the hundreds of thousands of hours of work that rodeo committee members around the country donate to putting on their local rodeos, has long made a practice of honoring outstanding volunteers around the country through its John Justin Standard of the West program. PRCA rodeos vote on the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of those thousands of volunteers. In 2022, that award went to Tim Baldwin, Chairman of the Livestock Welfare Committee for California Rodeo Salinas.

DONITA BARNES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The PRCA award honors contract personnel (such as announcers, bullfighters, clowns, specialty acts, secretaries and timers) who have been PRCA members for at least 15 years and have committed their lives to the rodeo industry, yet received little recognition for their commitment and contributions. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among the finalists. The posthumous recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes, and mentor to thousands of contestants and others involved with Barnes rodeos. The PRCA renamed the award in her honor in 2012.

PRORODEO AWARDS

Linderman Award Winner: Josh Frost

The PRCA Linderman Award is one of the most prestigious awards in ProRodeo. It recognizes a cowboy who won at least $1,000 in three events, and those events must include at least one roughstock and one timed event. The 2022 Linderman Award winner is Randlett, Utah, cowboy Josh Frost. This past season Frost earned $228,557 in bull riding, $4,037 in tie-down roping, and another $1,091 in the steer wrestling. He said qualifying for the award is at the top of his list each season when writing out his goals for the year. “It’s a great honor. It was one of my goals starting out the 2022 season,” said Frost, a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. “Being as committed as I am to winning a gold buckle in bull riding it really adds some challenges, but I take a lot of pride in the award. It’s always bittersweet when I know I get my qualifications for it.” He said it’s the cowboy legacy the award encompasses that keeps him competing for it year after year. Frost is the second member of his family to capture the distinguished Linderman Award, his older brother, Joe, 27, captured the award in 2014. “The cowboy legacy that goes with it is what really drew me in. The Linderman Award is very prestigious and like I said I enter all three events for that reason,” he said. “If they didn’t have the Linderman I probably wouldn’t enter the steer wrestling. That third event really adds a challenge to it. I take a lot of pride in that award to have my name on the list with all the other great cowboys that have won it.” He believes it’s an award that’s gaining more popularity across the ProRodeo ranks. Frost thinks the competition will be even stiffer in the years to come. “There’s several other guys who I think are starting to try and compete for it,” Frost said. “I think I might have a little more competition in the years ahead. It’s dang sure something I have my eyes set on and I would like to get my name on that list a few more times.” Frost has now won three straight Linderman awards. His first came back in 2019, followed up by 2021 and 2022. He hopes to be remembered as not just a bull rider, but a cowboy. He’s gained even more respect for the other events along the way. The Linderman Award was not awarded in 2020. “I grew up doing all the events and have spent a lot of time on them throughout my life,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for all the other events because I have competed on both ends and know what it’s like. I know how much time and effort it takes to be successful in the bull riding and I know the time and effort I’ve put into the timed-events and I’m not even nearly as competitive as the top guys in the world. At the end of the day I want to be remembered as a cowboy and not just a bull rider.”

Kyle Whitaker holds the PRCA record for most Linderman Awards won with 10 in his ProRodeo career.

Resistol Rookies of the Year

It was a great season for rookies in ProRodeo. The eight PRCA | Resistol Rookies of the Year combined to earn $573,559 in 2022. Of those eight, bareback rider Rockier Steiner, tie-down roper Riley Webb and bull rider Lukasey Morris will be making their debuts at the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge Dec. 1-10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. All the Resistol Rookies of the Year will be recognized Dec. 6 during Round 6 of the Wrangler NFR on the arena dirt.

ALL-AROUND AND TIE-DOWN ROPER OF THE YEAR

NAME: Riley Webb HOMETOWN: Denton, Texas

BIGGEST MOMENT OF THE 2022 SEASON? Riley: When I won the short round in Reno. I earned $16,000 in Reno and that got me in the Top 15 in the world standings for the first time which was very special. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WIN ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? Riley: The team roping I entered the last one of the year in Fort Worth (Texas) and that was the only one I entered, and we got a check. It feels great to win two Rookie of the Year awards and be able to make the NFR all in one year. That is pretty special.

Riley Webb won PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year for 2022.

BAREBACK RIDER OF THE YEAR

NAME: Rocker Steiner HOMETOWN: Weatherford, Texas

BIGGEST MOMENT OF THE 2022 SEASON? Rocker: Probably the Calgary Stampede. That was my biggest win and my most-prized win. I was just excited to get on in front of 110,000 people. That’s a moment I have been dreaming of since I was a little kid. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WIN ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? Rocker: It means a bunch. The Rookie of the Year is a big award for anybody, and it is definitely going to be in my trophy case. I just hope I can keep adding to the case. I think 2022 was one of the best years for a rookie. This was pretty much the first year that all the rodeos have been normal since COVID and some of the bareback riding rookies were some of the best I have seen in a few years.

STEER WRESTLER OF THE YEAR

NAME: Landris White HOMETOWN: Angleton, Texas

BIGGEST MOMENT OF THE 2022 SEASON? Landris: I feel like my most memorable moment was at Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo. I split the short round win and I finished third in the average, and I won a pretty good check ($4,577). That was one of my best rodeos in 2022. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WIN ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? Landris: To me, this means a lot. Every rookie when they start the year, they set the goal to win Rookie of the Year. For me to come out on top means a lot. At home, I put the work in just as much as everybody else, and it just all fell into place for me to be able to win Rookie of the Year. This definitely gives me a confidence boost for the 2023 season.

TEAM ROPING HEADER OF THE YEAR

NAME: Tanner James HOMETOWN: Porterville, Calif.

BIGGEST MOMENT OF THE 2022 SEASON? Tanner: I would say Bozeman Mont. I split the win over there at the Bozeman Stampede in August. That was my second my win of the season and that was part of a great week for me. I placed at a few rodeos that week and Bozeman was the last one we went to that week, and we won. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WIN ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? Tanner: This means a lot. You only get one opportunity
