Zinser was a member of the IPRA and the PRCA. He was selected to work the RAM Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo as a pickup man and qualified for the 2000 GLCFR in steer wrestling. He was known as one of the best pickup men around, someone you could count on to have your back in and out of the arena. After rodeo, he worked as a heavy equipment operator and for Central Michigan Contracting. Zinser enjoyed fishing, hunting and water sports. He loved children. His niece, Jayce, was his pride and joy. Zinser spoiled his friends’ kids and was like one of the kids anytime he was around them. He dedicated his life to Jesus Poway Rodeo dedicated to raising money for charity While best known for putting on the Poway (Calif.) Rodeo, the Poway Rodeo Committee is also dedicated to raising money for charity. The all-volunteer committee has organized the rodeo since 1973. The committee was unable to hold a rodeo in 2020 due to the pandemic, but the 2021 event is scheduled for Sept. 24-25. Murray Bankhead, vice chair, said the committee has started working on it and is reaching out to past and possible new sponsors. Members undertook giving the Poway Valley Riders Association arena a facelift. Among the work done was installing LED lights and redoing the announcer’s booth. BRIEFS

Award-winning Western writer McMurtry passes Award-winning novelist and screenwriter Larry McMurtry died of heart failure at 84 years old, according to his publicist, Amanda Lundberg. McMurtry, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 for “Lonesome Dove,” passed away March 25. McMurtry wrote many other novels, including “Terms of Endearment” and “The Last Picture Show,” a short biography of Crazy Horse and a collection of essays, according to the National Endowment for the Humanities, which awarded him a National Humanities Medal in 2014. His books were often set in Texas and focused on the mythical values of Texas and the American West. Mid-Plains Community College has fundraiser Almost $12,000 was raised during the Mid-Plains Community College Spring Fundraising Rodeo at the Kiplinger Arena in McCook, Neb., recently. Proceeds will go toward a combination of scholarships, practice equipment and team travel expenses. The event was dedicated to Garrett Nokes, the college’s rodeo team head coach who passed away Feb. 14. Nokes, who qualified for the 2005 National Finals Rodeo in steer wrestling, passed away after a horse accident. He was 45. The rodeo included a presentation featuring a saddled rider-less horse, led by Nokes’ son, Parker, who rode around the arena while Garrett’s bio was read. Some of the activities, including the sale of a steer and T-shirts, also raised money for the Nokes family. Anyone interested in purchasing
