COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

How did you get your start in rodeo? Creek: I grew up in Rogersville, Mo. My dad used to ride bulls, and I started getting on sheep when I was 2. I never tried other events, I just stuck to bull riding. I rode my first bigger bull when I was 15. I didn’t have very much success getting on bigger bulls until I was 17 or 18. I wasn’t very good. How did you get better at bull riding? Creek: I don’t really know. I just kept getting on and kept practicing. I’m a little more comfortable in the PRCA this year after spending two years on my permit. My first couple of years I was pretty nervous showing up with a bunch of big-name guys around at those big rodeos. How much did rodeoing on your permit help you? Creek: It definitely was good for me. I was able to meet people and learned how to rodeo because it’s a lot different than amateur rodeoing. When did you feel like you belonged as a PRCA bull rider? Creek: Probably at San Antonio this year. I finished third (and earned $10,950). That was probably my coolest experience so far. That’s the best I’ve ever done at a big rodeo. Are you competing at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo? Creek: Yes. I’m going as a replacement for Colton Byram who got hurt and had to have shoulder surgery. I got his spot in the Prairie Circuit at the last minute. This will be my first time competing at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. I hope I can win a chunk of money there, especially since it counts toward the world standings. What rodeo is on your bucket list to compete at? Creek: I really want to go to Pendleton (Ore.). I watched old videos from that rodeo growing up and I thought it was cool and old- fashioned. What bull do you most want to get a chance to ride? Creek: (Powder River Rodeo’s) Bruiser. I would love to get on a great bull like that at a big rodeo. What do you think makes a good bull rider? Creek: A lot of try. Did you do any other sports growing up? Bull rider Creek Young, 20, started mutton bustin’ when he was 2. Since, he’s followed in the footsteps of his father, Randy, who was a bull rider and bullfighter. After two years on his PRCA permit, things have been going well for Young in the 2021 season. He’s leading the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year standings with $22,581 and is seventh in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with an eye on qualifying for the Wrangler NFR.

CREEK YOUNG

Creek: Yes. I ran track and played basketball and football. In high school, I ran track my freshman year and my sophomore year before I started doing only rodeo. My second favorite sport was football. Who is your favorite football team? Creek: The Indianapolis Colts. My favorite player to watch is Patrick Mahomes. Where’s your favorite place to eat? Creek: Texas Roadhouse. I either get the ribeye or filet mignon. Do you have a favorite candy? Creek: Trolli Gummy Worms are my go-to.

What’s your favorite movie? Creek: Any Western starring John Wayne. What was your favorite Halloween costume?

Creek: I always just dressed up as a bull rider. It was easy. Do you have a favorite TV show you binge watch? Creek: I watch a lot of “Yellowstone” and “Criminal Minds.” Was there one thing you watched during COVID-19 quarantine that you questioned? Creek: Yes. “Tiger King.” I binge watched that with my buddy for like two days. It wasn’t that great, but it was entertaining. Did you have a favorite cartoon you watched growing up? Creek: “Tom and Jerry.”
