The four-time National Finals Rodeo bull rider continued a heater with his fourth top finish in August with a win at the Moses Lake Round-Up Rodeo. Spears topped the charts in Washington with an 89-point ride on Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Hell Yea Roscoe to earn $6,150. “Going into it, I knew that I had a really good bull,” Spears told the ProRodeo Sports News . “That bull came from Roscoe (Jarboe), and we’re really good friends and travel together. I know that Mike Corey is super proud of that bull. It’s one of his youngest bulls but one of his best bulls right now.” The 32-year-old from Redding, Calif., spurred Hell Yea Roscoe to a $6,150 payday, his largest since a second-place finish at the Red Bluff Round-Up on April 21. Spears benefitted from some intel on the bull before his ride but was a little surprised when the chute gate swung open. “He really bucked right out of there. He kicked super hard, and I was just a touch behind,” Spears recalled. “But he was really bucking, and I felt like I was throwing my biggest move and trying to match him move for move… I really wasn’t expecting him to be that strong and bucky for as young as he is, but we made it work.” The win at Moses Lake highlighted a recent trend of lucrative trips for Spears. In the middle of July, he fell on hard times and went to 18-straight rodeos without earning a dollar. Since July 27, Spears has been red hot, earning $24,055 at his last 13 rodeos with four top finishes. “I’ve been drawing good, and I’ve slowly been plucking away,” Spears said. “I think I’ve won more rodeos this year than ever in my career. When I’m drawing a good bull, it seems like I’m taking advantage of it and winning a lot of rodeos.” Spears sits 19th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $89,242 after his impressive start to August. “Over the history of my career, I’ve always had quite a bit of success from August on,” he said. “I’ve been working hard, eating healthier and working out more than I ever have. I’m probably in better shape, stronger and healthier than I’ve ever been.” Spears said the difference in this point of his career, compared to years past, is a heightened level of preparation for the grind of a long season. “When you’re fit and prepared, it’s a lot easier to mentally talk yourself into being ready,” he said. “Everything goes into being prepared for this time of year when it’s go, go, go, and there’s a lot of money to be won at rodeos every single day.” Spears is a four-time NFR qualifier but hasn’t competed under the bright lights of the Thomas & Mack Center since 2019. But a plethora of money left on the table and renewed confidence makes a return to Las Vegas seem like a real possibility. “The first time I didn’t even think of what could happen if you got on a hot streak and how much money you could win,” Spears said. “There’ve been times where I’ve won forty or fifty-thousand dollars in a few weeks. Once you do it one time, you look and see that it’s crazy how much money you could win.” Early in his career, Spears marked down two lofty goals he hoped to achieve before hanging up his spurs – qualifying for five NFRs and winning $1,000,000 in his career. He’s on the cusp of achieving his first goal and passed the seven-figure mark earlier this season. “Honestly, a million dollars was something that I thought was really big and something that would be very hard to do. And over time, it became pretty easy,” Spears said. “To accomplish a goal like that, I don’t even know how to explain it because you work so hard, and it’s in the back of your mind. “But once you achieve it, you’re like, ‘okay, what’s the next step?”
