BY KENSIE DARST-TODD Special to ProRodeo Sports News T he state of Oregon is home for young bareback rider Mason Stuller. The 20-year-old cowboy from Veneta is in his second full season of ProRodeo and making his presence felt. A trip to Hermiston for the Farm City Pro Rodeo paid dividends in more ways than one. In the first round, Stuller matched up with Korkow Rodeos’ I Fly Plane and delivered a solid 85-point ride. He followed that up with another strong performance during the second round, scoring 84.5 points on Calgary Stampede’s Born Fearless. His two head score of 169.5 points was enough to edge Mason Clements (168.5) for the win. “I was excited to have some horses that I knew were pretty good and I knew I could maybe show off a little bit,” said Stuller. “Leaving there, I was sitting pretty good in the aggregate, and I had a good shot at winning, so I was really excited.” Stuller’s connection to the Hermiston arena runs deep. He’s been riding there since his junior high school days. Returning as a professional rodeo athlete and clinching a victory there was nothing short of poetic. This year’s triumph holds even more significance when compared to last year’s rough ride, when he left with two less teeth than he arrived with. He was matched against Calgary Stampede’s Twin Cherry, which turned out to be a no score, but definitely a memorable ride. As a first-generation rodeo athlete, returning to Hermiston and walking away with this win leaves Stuller reminiscing on the path that led him to this success. “I’m the only person in my family that ever really rodeoed,” Stuller said. “I started riding sheep when I was little and then I started progressing up to steers and calves. Then I started on bareback in junior high and kept going from there and fell in love.” As of Aug. 12, Stuller sat 31st in the PRCA | RAM World Standings for bareback riding and leads the Columbia River Circuit Standings, holding a $3,031 advantage. He hopes to continue with a champion mentality and maintain momentum headed into the finals Oct. 17-19 in Redmond, Ore. As the end of the season is on the horizon, Stuller remains humble and ambitious for what lies ahead. “I’m just rodeoing as hard as possible, trying to make the National Finals Rodeo and get to the Top 15,” Stuller said.
