K yle Irwin set the tone in the championship round of the steer wrestling with a 3.5-second run, the fastest mark of the NFR Open. But his traveling partner, Cash Robb, was waiting in the wings. The defending NFR Average Champi on backed into the box two runs later and matched Irwin’s time to tie in the top spot. After tiebreakers, Robb earned the outright national championship title for the Wilderness Circuit.

“It was awesome, especially being able to do it with Kyle, my traveling partner,” Robb said. “Us being able to go out there and stick it on two steers was awesome.” The Altamont, Utah, cowboy split the top prize money with Irwin, as each took home $11,500. But Robb’s effort from the whole week earned him the outright title of national champion, in his first trip to the NFR Open.

“I owe it to Wags (Tyler Waguespack) and Kyle. Kyle was over there hazing for me and trying to help me win, and I was riding Wags’ horse Cheese. It was a great combination, and it worked out,” Robb said.
