MANAGER’S MESSAGE TRACY RENCK Ty Harris deserves praise; all-around race is wide open
C hristmas is Dec. 25 – but for tie-down roper Ty Harris – Christmas came early in the form of Cowboy Christmas. Upon further review, Harris set a Cowboy Christmas all events and single-event timed event earnings mark by earning $49,550, while team ropers Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira finished second in the 2024 Cowboy Christmas chart with $47,290 each. Harris is no stranger to success during the lucrative Cowboy Christmas run. Back in 2023, he set the then Cowboy Christmas single event timed-event earnings mark at $40,561. Harris accomplishments
over Cowboy Christmas are quite impressive considering prior to 2023 the top two cowboys on the Cowboy Christmas single-season earnings list were legends Ty Murray ($40,293 in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding in 1999) and Trevor Brazile ($39,993 in tie-down roping, team roping header and steer roping in 2011). Staying in the moment, there is an interesting storyline developing in the all-around race. Stetson Wright, the reigning five-time PRCA All Around World Champion has been out since December when he injured his hamstring in Round 2 of the NFR. Whether Wright will return this season is unknown, but his absence has opened the door for a compelling all-around battle. Shad Mayfield, the 2020

PRCA. He has three decades of experience in sports journalism.
money won in bull riding and all his money earned at Xtreme Bulls events do not count toward the all-around standings. Veteran team roping header Coleman Proctor also finds himself in the all-around conversation. The key for Proctor is qualifying for the NFR and then finding a way to claim a bid to the National Finals Steer Roping in November in Mulvane, Kan. Resistol Rookie Wacey Schalla could be a factor as well if he can qualify for the NFR in at least one of his events bareback riding or bull riding. If the Oklahoma cowboy can earn NFR bids in both his events, then he would put him squarely in all-around title hunt. Cowboys who have competed in two roughstock events at the NFR are great candidates to win the all-around, look no further than Wright. Then, there may be other unexpected cowboys who enter the all around race like tie-down roper John Douch, who was a quality steer wrestler back in the day. One thing is for sure this will be the most intriguing and exciting all around race in several years.
PRCA World Champion Tie-Down Roper, is leading the all-around race for the first time in his career since has banked at least $3,000 in another event, which in his case is steer roping. Mayfield has become the early favorite – if Wright doesn’t return to action – to win the all-around title, but it is not a slam dunk. Why? Simple. At the NFR in 2024, round winners will receive $33,687 and the average winners will take home $86,391. No lead in the all-around is safe until the curtain drops on Round 10 at the NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. A cowboy in the all-around race – if he wins Round 10 and the average – with take home $120,078 in one night. Other cowboys to consider in the all-around chase are bull rider Josh Frost. Frost also dabbles in tie-down roping and steer wrestling. The one thing fans need to understand with Frost is his ground

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
How’d you get your start in rodeo? Cole: My dad and family were always around cattle growing up. Then I started going to junior ropings around the house and now here we are a handful of years later. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Cole: I haven’t been in ProRodeo for long, but I wouldn’t say there has ever been a defining moment that I thought I made it. I would say whether it was going to happen, or it wasn’t I was always going to keep trying to make a career out of it. Why did you decide tie-down roping would be your event? Cole: I’ve always loved swinging a rope growing up and really anything to do with a rope. I’ve team roped a lot, but I’ve found that I like roping calves quite a bit more. Calf roping made more sense for me, and I liked it better I guess you could say. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Cole Clemons, 20, is taking the ProRodeo world by storm during his Resistol Rookie season. The Lipan, Texas, tie-down roper is just outside the Top 15 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $47,678 earned as of July 11. His biggest payday this season came at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, where he pocketed $11,439 for the second-place finish. Clemons is second in the Resistol Rookie of the Year race in tie-down roping.
COLE CLEMONS
Cole: In junior high I tried the saddle bronc and that didn’t go very long for me. I was not a huge fan. Then when I got to high school, I decided to mainly focus on just team roping and calf roping. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this season? Cole: I circuit rodeoed on my Permit for one year and won the circuit. I felt like my buddy Riley Webb was going to kill me if I didn’t get in the rig with him this year. So, I decided to buy my card and go at it. What have you learned during your Resistol Rookie season?
Cole: I started out rough and felt like I was trying to do too much. So, I’ve dang sure learned a lot and it’s mostly been simple stuff. One of the biggest things is to win when you can and do the best you can on each calf you run. You have to get the most you can out of each rodeo. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Cole: My favorite calf roper of all-time would have to be Trevor Brazile. The way he rode horses and the way he roped was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. So, I always tried to watch him, and I dang sure look up to him. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Cole: I haven’t been to all the rodeos yet, but so far it would definitely be RodeoHouston. I got to rope down there this year and it was very cool. It would be awesome to win that rodeo someday. What’s your favorite movie?
Cole: My favorite movie would have to be Lonesome Dove . What’s your go-to restaurant before or after a rodeo? Cole: That’s an easy one for me, we are definitely stopping at Chili’s. You cannot go wrong with Chili’s. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Cole: It was a 2011 single-cab Toyota Tacoma. That vehicle was completely unreliable, but it got me a lot of places. Do you have a favorite candy? Cole: I would have to say that Airheads are my favorite candy. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Cole: I’ve grown up hunting most my life and I love to hunt when I get the chance to. What’s your favorite holiday? Cole: The Fourth of July is my favorite holiday because there’s lots of good rodeos that pay well. What type of music do you like listening to? Cole: It depends on the hour really when it comes to my music selection. But I would say my favorite would probably be some old school music, Hank Williams Jr. is near the top of the list for me.

PRORODEO STOCK Calgary Stampede to retire X-9 Xplosive Skies Legendary Career BY TANNER BARTH T he legendary career of Calgary Stampede’s bucking horse X-9 Xplosive Skies has come to an end. The 14-year-old star horse suffered an injury outside of competition while being transported to the Lea Park Rodeo in 2021 and just last season was named Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year. In 2022, Logan Hay set the PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Record on Xplosive Skies. The duo combined for 95.5 points at the Hardgrass Bronc Match in Pollockville, Alberta. Over her career, she made six trips to the National Finals Rodeo (five in bareback, one in saddle bronc) and was named Bareback Horse of the NFR in 2016 and Saddle Bronc Horse of the NFR in 2023. Six cowboys reached the pay window on her back at the Finals,
Marwayne, Alberta, in early June. Keith Marrington, the Stock Contracting Representative for the Calgary Stampede, said while she will be greatly missed by rodeo fans and competitors, retiring Xplosive Skies was the best outcome given the situation. “She suffered a season ending injury and we made the decision to just go ahead and retire her. We can still look at this as a positive in our sense,” said Marrington. “She’s still only 14 years old and a really great mare. Now, we can breed her and raise some pretty good colts out of her through our Born to Buck program.” Xplosive Skies has undoubtedly been one of ProRodeo’s top horses ever since she made her NFR debut as a bareback horse in 2016. X-9 is one of just four horses to win PRCA Horse of the Year honors in two events. She claimed the World Champion Bareback Horse of the Year award in
highlighted by three round wins (Kaycee Feild, 91.5 points, Round 3, 2020; Jess Pope, Round 8, 89 points, 2020, Zeke Thurston, Round 5, 91 points, 2023). “She’s done so many great things in the rodeo arena in a short amount of time and now she will continue to hopefully produce world champions bucking horse on the ranch,” Marrington said. “She is so beneficial to the program we have up here, and I know she’ll be a great mare for years to come. Xplosive Skies last out was in the Championship Shootout at RodeoHouston, where Sage Newman rode X-9 for an 88-point ride. The granddaughter of ProRodeo Hall of Fame horse Grated Coconut will spend the rest of her days at home on the 23,000-acre Stampede Ranch in Alberta.
