Frost stays red hot with Cody Xtreme Bulls win Heating Up
BY BRADY RENCK Special to ProRodeo Sports News T he danger is real. Injuries remain a 100 percent certainty. The unpredictability of the beast causes sleepless nights. In order to succeed as a bull rider, it’s fair to say you have to do what others can’t do and won’t do. For Josh Frost, one of the best in the world, he leans heavily on brain over brawn. The approach has helped him deliver the best stretch of his career with a slew of victories and big paydays. “The mental part is big. Riding bulls is really simple. But it’s also really easy to get into your own head, and that’s why you see a lot of guys lose before they climb into the chute,” said Frost, 29. “So, I know I have to continue doing what I am doing because it’s working.” Frost has found his rhythm. Over the final week of June, he won the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede Xtreme Bulls, the West of the Pecos (Texas) Rodeo and tied for the victory at Rodeo of the Ozarks in Arkansas. For good measure, he added a third-place finish at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede Xtreme Bulls. Frost talks with humility about his run of success. But let’s be clear, his excellence is no accident. He puts in the time, sticks to a routine. It’s what helped him post an 89.5-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Stranger Danger to win in Cody. “The key is that you have to keep doing your basics, no matter if you are in the practice pen or the arena. Sometimes you might get bucked off. A lot of guys do. But you have to stick with the process,” Frost said. “I love being in Cody over the Fourth. It was a really good event. They sell out. The sun drops down and it cools off. It was 100 degrees, but the weather was perfect for the ride. And Frontier gets us great bulls. I thought I had a chance with my draw. They rode the bull two or three times. The scores were a little lower, but I dang sure knew what that bull was capable of doing.” Frost’s resume demands respect. He has qualified four times for the Nationals Finals Rodeo and notched a second place finish in the world standings from 2021-23. But as he moved to No. 2 in the current rankings, he has never been on a heater quite like this. He scored a 90 in Texas and 86.5 in Springfield and followed it up with his brilliance in Wyoming. He collected $23,551 in winnings over this stretch, rocket fuel for the ride into the Cowboy Christmas portion of the season. “I would say this is the first time I have won this many in a row. I have been drawing good bulls and taking advantage of it,” Frost said. “I have some more good draws coming, and it’s up to me to do my job.”
