BY BRADY RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News R iley Webb looks like a cowboy straight out of central casting starring in a script ripped straight from a Disney movie. He was still a teenager when he began his pro career as a tie-down roper. It was a result of his upbringing. His parents Dirk and Jennifer Webb work in the sport, running Webb Roping Productions. It is a sanctioned producer of cattle for the breakaway and tie down qualifiers for the Junior World Finals. Riley, as such, was pulled in this direction for years. Even so, his career has been remarkable. And his latest season is starting to follow suit. Don’t let Riley Webb get hot. Webb, 20, captured the tie-down roping crown at the Central Wyoming Fair & PRCA Rodeo in Casper, posting a time of 18.7 seconds on two head, edging out Lucas Potter (21.1). Webb sat in second place after the opening round by clocking a 10.0-second run. That time left him room for improvement and opportunity to pull out the win. “The calves were fast. I came back in the short round with a good plan, a good calf and had a good run,” said Webb, who hails from Denton, Texas. “The first run, when I got that 10-second time flat, the calf was all over the place. So, I knew that I was in a decent position. It worked out with the second calf.” Webb has a resume that makes eyes widen and necks snap back in appreciation. In his first full season, Webb won the Resistol Rookie of the Year Award in tie-down roping and all-around. He finished 10th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Turns out, he was just getting warmed up. He answered in 2023 with his first gold buckle, winning the title at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo by earning $172,447 in Las Vegas alone. As anyone who has been a champion knows, the only thing harder than winning a title is defending it. Webb does not sneak up on anyone. Perhaps he never did. But he definitely does not now. This season has been a little uneven by his standards, but he ranks fourth in the standings and is determined to climb over the next few months. “Man, it’s about doing my job every time. That’s the key,” said Webb. “I have had my ups and downs this year. But I am feeling really good right now.” Webb sounds serious when he talks, belying his age. Make no mistake, there’s nothing he would rather do than chase another gold buckle. “I love to rope and compete,” Webb said. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I am just trying to move up a few stops and get back out there in Las Vegas and have some fun.”
