S age Newman delivered in front of a hometown crowd to win the World Famous Miles City (Mont.) Bucking Horse Sale Matched Xtreme Broncs Ride and collect a major payday on the Rank 45 Xtreme Broncs Tour on May 17. Newman secured the championship title against a loaded field of bronc riders and horses, by seizing the moment during a short round matchup with J Bar J’s National Finals Rodeo bucking horse, Fringe Jacket. Newman matched the horse for a 91-point ride, the highest score of the event, to finish on top. “Oh, I was excited,” Newman said. “That was a big stud, and there have been a lot of points on him before. I knew he was going to fire, and he dang sure did.” The victory came with a share of the event’s $75,000 payout and pushed the five-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier inside the top 10 of the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings as the summer run begins to take shape. Newman earned $20,564 for his performance. Newman first advanced through the long round aboard J Bar J’s Faded Spark, a horse he believed could put him in contention, with an 88-point ride to place third in the go-round. “I’ve seen Faded Spark before, and then I’ve seen my buddies, like Wyatt Casper, Brody Wells and Stetson Wright, on him and they won some points on him,” Newman said. “So, I knew I had a good chance to make it back to the short round.” After an impressive showing in the opening round, Newman made the most of his opportunity aboard Fringe Jacket in the finals. “I try to keep everything pretty simple and just do my job the best I can every time,” Newman said. “He had a really good day and was flashy and stalled out in front of the crowd and let me show off my stuff.” Newman’s 91-point ride edged out the reigning Miles City, Mont., Xtreme Broncs champion Dawson Hay, who matched J Bar J’s Gronk for a 90-point ride. For the Melstone, Mont., cowboy, the home-state win carried extra meaning. Newman grew up less than two hours from Miles City and has competed at the event for years, even winning the bronc match before it became a PRCA-sanctioned event. “I think I was about 19 or 20 years old, and I ended up winning the event,” New man said. “But to be able to win it now as a PRORODEO event for a second time, it’s unbelievable, and I knew Fringe Jacket was going to fire. It’s kind of a hometown rodeo for me, so it was pretty cool to get the win.” The result also provided a timely spark to Newman’s season. His last event cham pionship came in January at the Rodeo Rapid City (S.D.) PRCA Xtreme Broncs Match with an 89.5-point trip aboard Summit Pro Rodeo’s Cowboy Fool. Then Newman decided to intentionally slow his schedule in May to remain home and help with ranch work and spring brand ing, before ramping back up ahead of the summer run. “Winning here is a huge motivation,” Newman said. “I kind of like taking May kind of slow, and we get a bunch of cow work done and branding and stuff, so I haven’t really been to many rodeos in May here. To be able to come down here and win that much money, it’s unbelievable. It’s going to kickstart my summer run.”
