W eston Patterson leaned on a known matchup during the championship performance April 19 at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up, where he delivered an 89-point ride on Northcott & Yule Rodeo’s Mary Lou to claim the saddle bronc riding title and earn a large payout. For the 24-year-old Kansas cowboy, the draw wasn’t a gamble, but rather an opportunity he knew how to capital ize on. “That horse, it was a rematch,” Patterson said. “I had the horse in Calgary, Alberta, last summer and was 89 points there. So, I knew I had a dang sure, a really, really good chance today to win.”
With that prior success in mind, Patterson approached the ride with a clear plan — focused on execution and familiarity with how the horse rides — letting the rest take care of itself. This win marked Patterson’s second of the season, giving him a boost in both earnings and confidence as he heads into the summer run. “This money here is big. This rodeo is big for our tour,” Patterson said. “To get this win and get a push in the world standings this early in the year, that’s going to be pretty crucial.”
