T eam roping times at Rodeo Austin have already been fast, but everything got faster March 25. Dustin Egusquiza/J.C. Flake snapped a 2.9-second run to speed past the existing record of 3.2 seconds, which was set last June by Mason Appleton and Rance Doyal at the Snake River Stampede in Nampa, Idaho. Doyal matched it again at Austin last week while roping with header James Arviso.
“That is probably the coolest thing that’s ever hap pened to me in rodeo, and I feel like I’ve done a lot,” said Egusquiza, 30, an eight-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier from Marianna, Fla. For Flake, everything was a bit of a blur. “It was unbelievable,” said Flake, 27, a heeler from Milsap, Texas. “Dustin did an outstanding job and headed him so fast that it was unbelievable. Steiner won his second straight Rodeo Houston title on Disco Party March 21.
