COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

Trenton Smith, a 24-year-old from Bigfoot, Texas, is having a solid rookie season. As of May 16, he was third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings as a tie-down roper with $13,275. Smith is 6-foot-1 and weighs 270 pounds. He bought his PRCA card in September. He’s healthy after battling injuries last year, when he suffered a torn groin and a pulled muscle in his back.

What has this season been like for you? Trenton: It has been good. It’s definitely different than competing in amateur rodeos and all that. There are places that I should have done better. The biggest adjustment is learning how not to beat yourself. My rodeo goals are to try and win rookie of the year and make the NFR. To reach those goals, I have to capitalize on every opportunity I get. Who is your biggest rodeo influence? Trenton: My dad, Robert. He was a (tie-down) roper in the PRCA. We run a cattle operation (4S) so we have always had horses and calves, and I just started rodeoing.

How cool was it to earn $6,377 at Rodeo Austin (Texas) in March? Trenton: I had never been to Austin before. That was probably the biggest crowd I’ve ever roped in front of, and that’s the most money I have won at a rodeo. It was a cool deal. It was something I will not ever forget. What horses have you been using this season? Trenton: My main horse is Jelly Bean, 12. I just bought him six months ago. My other horse I use is Chico, and he’s 19. Jelly Bean has not been out a whole lot, so he’s adjusting to the road and the miles. Chico is the same every time. You don’t have to do very much with him. I’ve had him for four or five years. What’s your favorite restaurant? Trenton: Chili’s. I get the Big Mouth Bites (pictured at right). What’s your g o-to dessert and candy? Trenton: The Houston Astros. Alex Bregman is my favorite player on the Astros. I did get to see one of their games last year. It was awesome. We sat two rows up from the field along the first base dugout. They were playing the Oakland A’s. What’s your go-to show on Netflix? Trenton: Peaky Blinders . It’s an old-time gangster show, and I like it. What movie can you quote lines from? Trenton: The Wolf of Wall Street. It’s one of my favorite movies for sure. What’s the last music concert you attended? Trenton: I saw Aaron Watson in Red Bluff (Calif.). It was neat. We got to go in the VIP area, and we had a lot of fun. Who is your favorite musical artist? Trenton: Luke Combs. What is your favorite cartoon? Trenton: Tom and Jerry . Did you play any other sports growing up? Trenton: I did year-round travel baseball, and then I played through high school. What’s it like growing up and living in the small town of Bigfoot? Trenton: We have a post office and one little general store. I enjoy the small-town atmosphere. I could not live in a big city. There are too many people and too much traffic. I don’t like traffic. What rodeos are on your bucket list to compete at? Trenton: I would probably say San Antonio (Stock Show & Rodeo) would be my first choice, second to the NFR. I also want to rope at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days. What’s the coolest part of being a PRCA cowboy? Trenton: The places you get to go and see and getting to see the different parts of the country. Who are you traveling with? Trenton: Ty Harris. It’s been really good traveling with him. He went and did it all last year, and he is able to teach me the ins and outs of entering, getting places and doing this and that. We became pretty good friends. Trenton: Cheesecake and Starburst. What sports team do you root for?
