BY TRACY RENCK J ohn Douch’s PRCA career has been a work in progress. Now, in his second season on his PRCA card, the Huntsville, Texas, cowboy is turning heads. Douch won the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo with a 27.9-second time on three head to capture the biggest win of his career. “That was my first time at Guymon, and it was great to get the win.” said Douch, 22. “I was just trying to be consistent, and I had three good calves I could place on. I was one of the last guys to go out (in the third round), and I just didn’t want to beat myself.” Douch left Guymon after earning $5,047. Douch’s rodeo career has been nurtured under the tutelage of ProRodeo Hall of Famer Joe Beaver, an eight-time world champion who won five tie-down roping titles (1985, 1987-88, 1992-93). “I rope with Joe every day in Huntsville, Texas, and I’ve been doing that since I was in eighth grade,” Douch said. “It’s great roping with Joe. He’s been there and done that, and he knows all the ropes and how to coach me and make me better.” Douch was riding a horse named Boss, 14, owned by Beaver. “My horse could not have been better,” Douch said. Before buying his PRCA card in December 2017, Douch qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo three times each in tie-down roping and steer wrestling, highlighted by being the reserve tie-down champion in 2017 while competing for Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas. Last year, Douch finished 43rd in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $37,146. He sat 29th in the May 16 standings with $18,902. “My goal this year is to make the NFR,” Douch said. “I need to stay focused to reach that goal. Whenever you make a bad run, you have to learn how to keep going to the next rodeo because there are so many rodeos in the summer time that you don’t get to practice. You have to keep the right mindset.” Tie-down roper gets career-topping win
