PRCA ProRodeo photo by Ryan Jae PRORODEO fans look on during the awards ceremony at the 2024 National Finals Steer Roping in Mulvane, Kan. Cole Patterson captured his third gold buckle at the Kansas Star Arena.

NFSR has found a home at the Kansas Star I t is no secret that finding a home for the National Finals Steer Roping wasn’t easy in the past for the PRCA. From 1959 until 2013, the NFSR had countless homes for one reason or another. Both events take place at the Rotunda right down the escalator from the arena. On Friday, Nov. 1 at the Kansas Star, a Ladies Luncheon took place, and it was run by women who run businesses and households, have a passion for steer roping and know how to run a first-class luncheon. Inside the arena, the competition was as good as it has ever been. All 15 steer ropers earned at least $15,197 – and to break that down even more five steer ropers earned at least $44,000 at the NFSR.

The list consists of Clayton, N.M. (1959-60); Laramie, Wyo. (1961 and 1973-83); Douglas, Wyo. (1962); Pawhuska, Okla. (1963-64 and 1971-72); Vinita, Okla. (1965-66); McAlester, Okla. (1967-68); Pecos, Texas (1969-70); Guthrie, Okla. (1984-2000 and 2009-13); Amarillo, Texas (2001-2005); and Hobbs, N.M. (2006-2008). Well, the NFSR definitely found a home sweet home in 2014. Since then, the NFSR has taken place at the Kansas Star in Mulvane, Kan., 20 miles from Wichita. It has been a fantastic venue for the NFSR, and that was once again the case Oct. 31 through Nov. 2. The Kansas Star welcomed the 15 best PRCA steer ropers with open arms. There was a back number ceremony Oct. 31 at the Kansas Star where all the contestants and contract personnel were recognized. That was an historic evening as PRCA CEO Tom Glause announced – that for the first time – steer ropers will be able to compete in their first Playoff Series, culminating at the end of September in Sioux Falls, S.D. There were plenty of reasons why the latest NFSR was successful, it was a village of people who helped make it run smoothly. People like longtime chute boss John Gwatney. In recent years, Gwatney has been instrumental in advancing the NFSR with things like a pre-event tailgate party with guests and of course the Buckle Presentation after each night of competition.

The top NFSR money earners were Scott Snedecor ($82,325); J. Tom Fisher ($59,458); Cole Patterson ($56,525); John E. Bland ($54,998); and Slade Wood ($44,580). The total purse was an NFSR-record $525,000. “I really like that arena, your stalls, the hotel, the casino and restaurants are all right there together,” said J. Tom, the 2022 PRCA Steer Roping World Champion, about the setup in Mulvane. “My favorite part is the convenience and how easy it is to get your family from the room to (the Kansas Star Arena). Then, to get up in the morning and walk out of your hotel room and go right to your stall and feed your horse. “To go from the hotel to the casino, you just walk down the hall and there it is. It is a great place. I like the (Kansas Star) Arena a lot. The Kansas Star gets more welcoming and better every year and of course the best thing about it is getting to rope for that kind of money (at the NFSR) is incredible. It is something we never thought would happen.” And, right on cue the 2024 NFSR delivered a fantastic finish with Patterson claiming his third gold buckle. Steer roping has never been better.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

Jace Helton, 22, had a Permit season to remember in PRORODEO. The Tolar, Texas, team roping heeler earned $78,099 in 2024. His breakout season was highlighted by winning Ogden (Utah) Pioneer Days with partner Shay Dixon Carroll. The duo pocketed $8,241 each at the PRCA Playoff Series rodeo. Helton has his eyes on a Resistol Rookie of the Year title in 2025.

JACE HELTON

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Jace: I didn’t grow up with horses or anything like that until I was like nine or 10. Then we started riding them because of my uncle. I think I went to a Dusty Watkins team roping clinic for my 12th birthday and that was the first time I roped. One thing led to another and now here I am roping as a pro. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Jace: I was a very optimistic kid. So, before I was ever even competing, I said this was something I was going to do. But there was a moment there coming out of high school where I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it because I was so far behind everybody else my age. I figured if I could get around the right guys to help me that it was something I could make happen. Why did you decide team roping would be your event?

Jace: We went up to a ranch in northern Utah that my uncle was working on when I was younger. The first day we were there they branded a couple hundred head of cattle. I saw them rope and thought it was something I wanted to do. I didn’t even know what team roping was at that point. I just wanted to be able to heel in the branding pen. The rest is history. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Jace: I had a brief stint as a calf roper in high school, but it did not go very well. Then I tried it again in college and quickly remembered why I team rope. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this season? Jace: Buying it this year had kind of been my plan all along. The first year I got my Permit, I was really green in rodeo and knew I needed to make a plan. It took me a couple years to get to this point. But I feel like everything came together for me to go into my (Resistol) Rookie season. What do you hope to learn during your Resistol Rookie season? Jace: You always want to learn and get better when you’re out there. I hope this summer will be like last summer where I’m going to learn a ton. Last year, I learned about taking care of my horses and just how to go up and down the road. I’m hoping this summer will be much of the same. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Jace: There have been so many people that have helped me so much. I think naturally you look up to the guys that are winning the most. You pay attention to what they’re doing and what horses they’re riding. That’s how you get better. Also, Jason Stewart has helped me a bunch and Shay Dixon Carroll. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Jace: Being from California it seems like everyone wants to win Salinas. I’ve wanted to win that one since I was a kid, plus all the big main rodeos

that every cowboy wants to win. Another one I always wanted to cross off my list someday was Ogden, Utah, because my uncle lives close to there and that’s where I got into horses at. We were lucky enough to win it this year. What’s your favorite TV series? Jace: It has to be Outer Banks for sure. What’s your go-to restaurant before or after a rodeo? Jace: If there is a Café Rio nearby, I’m probably stopping to get a barbacoa burrito.

What’s the first vehicle you drove? Jace: I think it was 2001 Ford F-350. Do you have a favorite candy? Jace: I try to stay away from it as much as I can, but sometimes when it’s late I’ll grab some of those Nerds gummy clusters. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Jace: I really like to golf and love going to the lake when I can. I grew up on the water, so any chance I get I’m out there. What’s your favorite holiday? Jace: I would say probably Christmas. We’ve always had huge family get togethers during Christmas where we get to see everyone. What type of music do you like listening to? Jace: I listen to pretty much everything. I’ve been liking Treaty Oak Revival recently. I like just about every type of music.

SHORT ROUND Teton Ridge acquires The Cowboy Channel Changing Hands

T eton Ridge, the premier brand at the intersection of Western sports and entertainment, announced Nov. 20 its acquisition of The Cowboy Channel, the leading network for Western sports, along with the Cowgirl Channel and The Cowboy Channel+, a live streaming and on-demand service. Acquired from Rural Media Group, a global leader in agriculture and rural lifestyle media and entertainment, this strategic move establishes Teton Ridge as the largest rights holder in the Western sports sector and reinforces its dedication to elevating the reach and impact of Western sports across the world. “The partnership with RMG and The Cowboy Channel brought rodeo to living rooms across the world in a manner never seen,” PRCA CEO Tom Glause said. “Rodeo is a showcase of Western lifestyle, and we are excited to work with Teton Ridge on the continued evolution of promoting our athletes and communities to millions of fans.” “This is a defining moment that solidifies Teton Ridge as an authority in Western sports and storytelling,” said Deirdre Lester, CEO of Teton Ridge. “We are committed to honoring the deep traditions of this sport while driving its growth and shaping the future of Western sports for generations to come.” As part of the acquisition, Teton Ridge retains an exclusive licensing agreement with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), covering more than 600 sanctioned rodeos domestically and internationally including the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Additionally, The Cowboy Channel has distribution agreements with major cable providers such as DISH, DIRECTV, Comcast, Cox, Charter, and Altice, among others. The Cowgirl Channel is currently exclusive to DISH. Raquel Gottsch Koehler, Co-Owner of Rural Media Group and daughter of the late founder and media visionary Patrick Gottsch, believes Teton Ridge is a perfect new owner for her father’s company. Legendary tie-down roper Ernie Taylor died Wednesday at his home in Hugo, Okla. He was 81. A lifelong native of Hugo, the legendary tie-down roper represented his community as an eight-time NFR qualifier and 1973 Rodeo Cowboys Association Tie-Down Roping World Champion. Taylor also served as a mentor and friend to some of the most prolific cowboys in PRORODEO history, including ProRodeo Hall of Famer Roy Cooper. “He was the very best friend I ever had,” ProRodeo Hall of Fame tie-down roper Roy Cooper said. “I looked up to him. He’s the Oklahoma Outlaw. And he had the very best horse in the world. Even today, there’s no better roping horse in the world than Scorpion.” Taylor served in the United States Army, and attended

“Our father built The Cowboy Channel to celebrate and elevate Western sports, and Teton Ridge’s commitment to preserving the authenticity of the Western lifestyle aligns with that vision. We pass the torch to a team that shares our deep passion for rodeo and Western sports,” Gottsch Koehler said. Teton Ridge was founded in 2019 with strategic funding from investors, including acclaimed investor and entrepreneur Thomas Tull, founder of TWG and founder and CEO of Guggenheim Partners Mark Walter, Jim Breyer, and the Lee Bass Family Office, all of whom shared a vision to expand the reach and impact of Western sports. The Cowboy Channel, founded in 2017 by Gottsch, pioneered 24 hour rodeo and Western sports broadcasting, connecting tens of millions of viewers to live events, documentaries, and year-round coverage. The Cowgirl Channel launched in 2023 to further expand programming by providing a platform to highlight women in Western sports. Following Gottsch’s passing in May, his daughters, Raquel Gottsch Koehler and Gatsby Gottsch Solheim, have led Rural Media Group. Harding Simmons University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. • Legendary stock contractor Donald “Donnie” Hutsell of Ritzville, Wash., died on Tuesday. He was 80. Hutsell was a co-owner of Flying 5 Rodeo Company and Big Bend Rodeo Company with Walter “Sonny” Riley. “One of my dad’s biggest deals was to build up the crowds at these rodeos, and give them as much entertainment as he possibly could,” Donnie Hutsell’s son Chad Hutsel said. During Hutsell’s tenure, Big Bend Rodeo and Flying 5 Rodeo produced some of the best bucking stock in the sport, including five PRCA Bulls of the Year, a Bareback Horse of the Year and three Saddle Bronc Horses of the Year. Big Bend Rodeo’s Spring Fling was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

At the PRCA National Convention, McCaffery will address rodeo committees and members from across the country as they prepare and cast a vision for the upcoming 2025 rodeo season. And now she’s proud to see the next generation of her family chart their own paths in rodeo and the Western industry.
