SHORT ROUND

TYLER WAGUESPACK BREAKS SAN ANGELO RECORD WITH 2.8-SECOND RUN

L ess than 24 hours after Jesse Brown tied the CRC Roofers Coliseum record with a 2.9-sec ond run in the first round of steer wrestling at the San Angelo (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo on April 16, a new best mark was set by Tyler Waguespack. Waguespack, a five-time PRCA Steer Wrestling World Champion, took down the record by a tenth of a second during slack, recording a run of 2.8 seconds to break a record that stood since 1986. He did so on the back of Sam Dixon's horse, Baby, and against the same steer Brown tied the record against the day before. "That's a lot of pressure. Jesse has already made an outstanding run on him with an incredible time," Waguespack said. "I had to sit there for about an hour-and-a-half to get ready to run. The horses we have in the rig this year, I'm on Sam Dixon's horse and then we have Kyle Irwin on Bruno on the hazing side, it makes my job super easy. "We got a good start at the barrier and the steer pretty much did all the work. I was just glad to kind of be in the way and a part of it." Waguespack entered the round tied for fifth after recording a 3.6 run in his first go. He and other cowboys watched as Brown tied the record set by PRORODEO Hall of Famer Roy Duvall in 1986 and matched by Bryan Fields in 2007. The run catapulted Brown to the

top of the leaderboard and in posi tion to overtake the lead in the av erage. But now Waguespack, one of the top ranked steer wrestlers in the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings entering San Angelo, found himself in better position to claim the buckle. "San Angelo is always a super-fast rodeo. If you're not at least three seconds on the steer you're not go ing to have an opportunity to get a check," Waguespack said. "It's super fun to have an extremely fast time at a rodeo like that." Waguespack's run is one of the at the National Finals Rodeo, which was set at 3.0 seconds by PRORODEO Hall of Famer Steve Duhan in 1986. Fields matched the run at the NFR in 2001. Much like Waguespack, Brown knew he had gotten off to a fast start in Round fastest ever recorded in PRORODEO histo ry. It also beats out the fastest time ever recorded

wrestle the steer to the ground. "I just didn't expect to see a two on there. I've never seen that in my life," Brown said. "It was just kind of the perfect storm. The steer was slow, and I was on a fast horse. I knew it was fast, but I guess I just assumed a three or something." Brown went on to win the title at San Angelo with an average time of 10.7 seconds on three head. Waguespack finished 11th in the average.

steer wrestler Walt Arnold, to make up ground. It gave the 32-year
