BRODY WELLS TAKES CONTROL EN ROUTE TO XTREME BRONCS FINALS WIN

By Zach Alvira

B rody Wells knew exactly what he needed to accomplish head ing into the short go at the Xtreme Broncs Finals in Rapid City, S.D., Aug. 17. The 21-year-old Powell, Wyo., cowboy was the only bronc rider to record a 90-plus point ride in the long round. Ahead of the short round, Wells drew a matchup with Big Bucks Rodeo's Freckles, a horse that has been ridden seven out of 10 times this season with an average score of just over 81 points. It was an ideal matchup of sorts for Wells, who controlled the narrative with his 92-point ride on Champi onship Pro Rodeo's Damaged Goods earlier in the night. He needed just over an 85 to win the average title, but Wells aimed higher

and delivered. A second 90-point ride - this one a 91 - allowed him to cruise to the championship with an overall score of 183 points on two head, six points higher than runner-up Zac Dallas. Wells earned an event record $37,901 for 16 seconds of work. "To go in there and draw a horse like that and have a 90-plus to set the pace, it gave me a lot of momentum heading into the short round,” Wells told the PRORODEO Sports News. “I went into the short round with confi dence. It’s just special.” The Xtreme Broncs Finals brought some of the top bronc riders in the world together. Eight-time PRCA World Champion Stetson Wright competed alongside his two brothers, reigning PRCA World Champion Sad

dle Bronc Rider Ryder and Statler. Dawson Hay, Kade Bruno, Zeke Thurston, Brody Cress, Sage New man, Wyatt Casper and Ben Anders en were also in the field, representing most of the Top 15 saddle bronc riders in the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings. A field that loaded meant Wells had a chance to put his name in the history books in Rapid City. In just its sixth year, the Xtreme Broncs Finals has a short list of winners - Casper won the event the last two years. Wells now joins the champion ranks, an honor that comes during a strong stretch of rodeos. “I’ve dreamed of winning that since before I even started (rodeoing),” Wells said. “I remember watching it on TV and seeing (Brody) Cress and Ryder (Wright) win it. I remember

he placed second at Rodeo Billings (Mont.) and the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo. Those performances followed up first-place wins at the Bozeman (Mont.) Stampede and the Lea County PRCA Rodeo in Lovington, N.M., a PRORODEO Series rodeo. He also picked up a victory at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo, another Series event, and big checks in North Dakota, where he made multiple stops. “I’ve just been riding out the lows and riding out the highs,” Wells said. “I control what I can control and come into every ride with confidence … walk up to the bucking chutes with your shoulders back and chin up ready to win.” The checks have proven to be pivotal as he has crept up the world stand ings. He entered Rapid City with less than $30,000 separating him and the

top three in the standings. The win moved him to fourth in the world, giving him a boost of mo mentum as he begins to solidify his second qualification for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December to chase his first gold buckle. “It’s all about keeping the momentum going,” Wells said. “I don’t think too far ahead. Anything can happen when you get to the NFR and everybody wants to be a world champ. I believe I can but I’m just going to keep it simple, do my job every night and see where we’re at after the Round 10.”

can’t wait to get my card and be riding there.’ “Now to win it and have my name up there is pretty

neat.” Wells' hot streak began in late July with top 10 finishes at key PRO RODEO Series rodeos, including Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, Utah Days of '47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City,

and the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo in Castle Rock, Colo. It carried over into August where

The top 40 bull rider's chances of a big payday increased when he matched up with All In Pro Rodeo's Regulator - the same bull that Bryce Jensen won the Kitsap Stampede on Aug. 22. Skogquist matched Regulator for an 88-point ride to claim the top spot in the Rank 45 Xtreme Bulls event. "I was completely ecstatic when I found out I had (Regulator)," Skogquist told the PRORODEO Sports News. "They've been 90 or 91 on him a few times this year, and I watched them (Jensen on Regulator) because I was out the same night. My mindset was pretty simple, just go at him and sit in the middle. SPECIALTY ACT BOBBY KERR BRINGING ENERGY TO RODEOS DESPITE CANCER BATTLE By Zach Alvira

14 PRORODEO Sports News

I t's rare to see Bobby Kerr without a smile on his face in and around a PRORODEO arena. It's what he lives for. It's the air he likes to breathe. Entertaining rodeo fans is something he has done for more than two decades, and since 2014 in the PRCA. He's faced many bouts with adversity, but his current fight has prov en to be his toughest. "We've basically done all we can do," Kerr said. "I've got rodeos booked as long as we are able. Some days I'm better than others." Kerr was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2021. He underwent chemotherapy treat ment, which proved to be successful as the tumor shrunk. But in 2023, it was discovered the tumor had spread to his stomach, liver, chest and lungs. At that point, Kerr said it seemed like doctors wanted to throw in the towel. Chemotherapy would only slow the spread. Experimental drugs were out of the question as he didn't want to be a guinea pig. He was offered hos pice care with the intention of it simply being used for pain management. He decided to manage the pain himself and go back on the road to perform at rodeos. Scans showed no further spreading, so doc tors gave him the go-ahead to continue doing what he loves. "We do whatever we can do for pain," Kerr said. "We usually try to time it so it's kicked in so I can do my performance. I've tweaked my performance a bit, doing stuff I know I can do." Rodeo has always been a way of life for Kerr. He has trained horses for more than 50 years and is well-known pairing his equine part ners with dogs in his act. One act, which he utilized while in Spanish Fork, Utah, involves a horse sitting in an old automobile with two dogs on the hood. It's one of his original acts that helped him earn

BOBBY KERR (CONTINUED)

the PRCA Specialty Act of the Year Award five times. He's been to the NFR once and in 2011 was named a fi nalist and fan favorite of the Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover. He won the title in 2012. In 2013 he was named IPRA National Finals Rodeo Showcase Champion. A year later he was a Mustang Million Finalist with two horses and made an appearance on Good Morning Amer ica. Perhaps one of Kerr's most proud accomplishments, though, is his creation of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, located in the Stockyards in Fort Worth, Texas. He was inducted into the hall he founded with his wife Susan in 2021. "It was unbelievable," Kerr said of his induction. "I wasn't even rodeoing then. I knew a lot of cowboys because I used to build Western furniture. I never dreamed of being in it myself. It was a really special night." Kerr's battle with cancer has brought the PRORODEO community together to rally around him. He's been hon ored throughout the season at most of his stops, and those he has to cancel last minute due to pain have been more than understanding. But Kerr tries to avoid doing that as much as possible. He wants to fulfill his schedule to the best of his ability. More than anything, it's because it brings him joy. The Fiesta Days Rodeo in Spanish Fork, Utah, was a bucket list item for Kerr. When he was first diagnosed with cancer, he had to cancel his appearance. Even in pain this year, he made it his mission to cross that rodeo off his list. He did and he was honored for it.

"It's like a dream that people have reached out," Kerr said. "The announcers, the crowd … standing ovations and the people com ing back to find us at the barns to talk to us. Some tell us about their experience with cancer. I've heard a lot of stories. "It's mind blowing to me that people have taken an interest in my cancer."

Kerr has become an inspiration. Not only to those in the PRO RODEO community, but to his wife, Susan. As his pain has progressively wors ened due to the cancer, Kerr has been unable to travel in the family rig like he used to. Simple bumps in the road can cause immense pain, so he now flies to almost every rodeo he per forms at. He and Susan hired a driver for the rig. Susan rides along to look after the horses and dogs. Susan said she is proud of how her husband has battled his illness. He has never complained and never felt sorry for himself in the process. He takes things one step at a time, inspiring everyone around him along the way. "I don't know if it's the adrenaline coursing through his veins that just gives him that little more oomph to go do what he's got to do," Susan said. "I know it's helping him, because I see him first day to the last day. Every body else is getting tired and worn out, but by the last day, he's feeling so much better. It's just amazing to see,

and I'm just so proud of him." Kerr doesn't know when his PRORO DEO career will come to an end. It's not something he often thinks about. Every day he wakes up and assesses how he feels. That's how he decides to go about his day. In November 2024, Kerr was told by doctors he wouldn't live to the end of the year. He's surpassed that mark by a long shot. He said he knows it could be any day, week, month or longer that his body gives up the fight with cancer. But if he can still perform, he's going to. At the end of the day, bringing joy to rodeo fans fuels him to keep doing what he loves. "I tell committees all the time I'm a high-risk hire," Kerr said. "Something can happen any day. I just get a joy of when I get on my horse and get comfortable. The performance keeps me going."

LAYTON GREEN CHOOSES

WISELY ON HIS WAY TO CANBY SADDLE BRONC TITLE

By Alex Riley, Special to PRORODEO Sports News

L ayton Green had a decision to make on where to be Aug. 16. The Millarville, Alberta, saddle bronc rider was pondering two

options - head to the short round at the Caldwell (Idaho) Night Rodeo or make his way to the Canby (Ore.) Rodeo for a one-header. When he saw his draw in Canby, the choice was an easy one. His intuitions turned out to be spot on. Green's matchup with Calgary Stampede bucking horse Dandy Delight was the showdown of the rodeo. His 90-point ride in the final go was a half-point better than Wyatt Casper, helping lift Green to a much-needed victory.

"I had actually been on that horse three times before I had him last night," Green said with a laugh. "I actually made the short round in Caldwell last night as well, but having that horse and knowing what he can be, I just de cided I would rather go to Canby and get on that one. I figured it was a pretty good chance to win first."

TRISTEN HUTCHINGS STAYS STEADY EN ROUTE TO COW TOWN XTREME BULLS WIN

By Alex Riley, Special to PRORODEO Sports News

T risten Hutchings' first trip to the Northeast certainly turned out to be a productive one.

including a win in the finals, making him the lone bull rider to cover three

on his way to 251.5 points and a near ly $19,000 payday. "It was fun. It was my first year coming over here.

He had never been north of the Mason Dixon Line until participating in the Cowtown Xtreme Bulls in Woodstown Pilesgrove, N.J., Aug. 11-12. After a sluggish start at the Rank 45 XBulls Tour destination, Hutchings bounced back with a pair of improved scores,

This is my first time even being on this side of the world," Hutchings said of the competition. "They put a pretty good pen of bulls together over here for being on the East Coast. They bring some guys from Oklahoma and they bring a good set of bulls over here."

S tetson Wright added anoth er key win to his summer run on his home turf, claiming the saddle bronc riding title at the 2025 Mountain Valley (Utah) Stam pede Aug. 2 with an 89-point ride aboard Powder River Ro deo's Flip A Coin. The five-time PRCA All-Around World Champion (2019 2023) continues to chase world titles in both saddle bronc and bull riding. The win in Heber City moves him one step closer to that goal, and with plans to make an appearance at the 2025 Wran gler National Finals Rodeo. "Heber (City) was super good - I had a horse from Powder River called Flip A Coin. Statler (his younger brother) just won Herriman, Utah, on that horse so I knew that I could win on it," Stetson said. "It's a big gray horse with a little scoot, and then just jumps and kicks just like a guy wants. I feel like if you run in a good horse, there's a good chance that I can make something hap pen. So, it was super good to draw."

DYLAN TERRO ON ROAD TO RECOVERY AFTER CHEYENNE ROUGHSTOCK GATE ACCIDENT By Zach Alvira

T he condition of Dylan Terro, who was kicked in the chest while working the roughstock gate at Cheyenne Frontier Days on July 25, is improving, according to Smith Pro Rodeos General Manager Cody Kidd. But the road to recovery remains long. "He's making major improvements," Kidd told the PRORODEO Sports News. "Doctors are pleased with everything he's doing so far and the progress he's made since the acci dent happened. Don't get me wrong, he still has a lot to go through as far as his chest, his ribs and the other injuries that weren't as extensive at the time." Terro, who works for Smith Pro Rode os, was tended to by multiple doctors

on the dirt following the accident July 25 during the semifinal rounds. He was taken by ambulance to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center where he was initially given grim odds of over coming the injury. The main concern was Terro's heart, as the blow from the horse caused serious trauma and broke several ribs. Machines assisted his breathing and heart in the early days following the injury. But he has remained stable during the short periods of time the machines were turned off. The PRORODEO community has shown support for Terro and his fam ily, with over $30,000 raised for him in the Cheyenne Frontier Days 50/50 raffle during the rodeo.

A Venmo account has been set up by Dylan's wife, Jolie, for donations: @ Jolie-Boudreaux-1. The last four digits of her phone number are 2990. Cards and checks can be sent to the following address: DYLAN TERRO C/O VERABANK 105 HWY 31 E. PO BOX 127 CHANDLER, TEXAS 75758 "It's amazing to see the support," Kidd said. "People are waiting to help and give, it's overwhelming to be honest. There are so many people out there wanting to help and people doing something every day to help."

37,901 The total earnings by saddle bronc rider Brody Wells after completing two 90-plus point rides en route to the Xtreme Broncs Finals win in Rapid City, S.D., and a new event record on Aug. 17.

$49,797 The total earnings for Stetson Wright in bull riding and saddle bronc riding at the Ellensburg Rodeo and Xtreme Bulls, Walla Walla Frontier Days and Magic Valley Stampede. Wright took home the bull riding title at the Ellensburg Xtreme Bulls and saddle bronc title at Walla Walla.

$18,716 The total earnings for saddle bronc rider Damian Brennan after solid performances in Ellensburg, Walla Walla and the Magic Valley Stampede Labor Day Weekend.

GARY REMPEL PICKUP MAN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AFTER NEARLY 50 YEARS

By Zach Alvira

F or nearly five decades, Gary Rempel has been responsible for ensuring the safety of roughstock athletes and the horses and bulls they ride in PRORODEO competitions. He excelled at one of ro deo's most important jobs. But now, after an illustri ous career that includes nine trips to the Wran gler National Finals Ro deo as a pickup man and the 2017 PRCA Pickup Man of the Year honor, Rempel announced his retirement. "I've been slowly work ing toward it," Rempel told the PRORODEO Sports News. "I made my mind up a couple years ago and told Cal gary (Stampede) it would be my last. I wanted to slow down, and C5 Rodeo offered me a job. I said I'd give them two years."

Rempel's retirement tour came to an end in Helena, Mont., at the Last Chance Stampede in late July. He was honored by the Last Chance committee with a belt buckle and engraved knife.

bucking horse, Virgil, who is widely regarded as one of the best of all time. "I got to work with some of the best horses of all time. That's one of the things I do miss," Rempel said. "(Virgil) is amazing. Him, Grated Coconut and (Kesler Championship Rodeo's) Cool Alley were all great to be around." Rempel leaves rodeo with plenty of accolades outside of the NFR and PRCA annual honor. He was a pickup man for the Canadian Finals Rodeo 21 times. In 2009 he was named the Canadian Cowboy of the Year. He was inducted into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2013, and the next year was inducted into the Pendleton Roundup & Happy Canyon Hall of Fame. Leaving rodeo won't be easy for Rempel. Though having the op portunity to stay home rather than hit the road is something he admits he is looking forward to. He plans to take it easy with his wife, Judy. She will remain working for the next year or so, but the two have plans to travel. Rempel said it may be hard for him to stay away from rodeo altogether. He may help out local ranches close to his Montana home. He also told his C5 colleagues he may end up at rodeos they provide stock for, offering some critiques to his fellow pickup men. "They're going to have to put up with me a little bit," Rempel laughed. "I might show up here and there and critique those guys for the heck of it." No matter how involved Rempel is in the coming months and years, PRO RODEO will always hold a special place in his heart. "Rodeo is all I've done," Rempel said. "You meet so many good people … contestants and contractors … all the friends you make. I'll miss a lot of that. Rodeo gets to be part of you."

"I thought it would be as good a place as any," Rempel said. "It's a strange feeling. I got home and thought, 'Darn it, that was the last rodeo.' It's dif ferent but I've been working toward it for two years so it's fine. I've got lots of stuff to do." Rempel worked for the Calgary Stam

pede from 1985 to 2023. He spent the last two years with C5 Rodeo, a fellow Cana da-based stock contractor. He's

worked with great rough stock over the years, including ProRodeo Hall of Fame bucking horse Grated

Coconut from Calgary Stam pede. Recently,

he's worked with C5's star

LONGTIME ROPER AND HORSE-TRAILER GURU GEORGE “PETE” ZANETTI PASSES AWAY

L ongtime pro roper and horse-trailer guru George "Pete" Zanetti passed away on July 30. He was 86. Pete was born in Victorville, Calif., to Anthony and Pearl Zanetti and grew up working in their donut shop, the Desert Maid Bakery. He began riding horses at a very young age with his father, picking up a rope when he was 9 years old and only putting it down a few years ago. Zanetti purchased his RCA card in 1958, when PRO RODEO memberships cost just $25. He hit the rodeo trail out of California in the 1960s and made the most of those calf-roping runs on a grandson of Driftwood that he rode for 18 years. Even when Zanetti was drafted into the Army in 1962, he was based at a missile defense station where his commanding officers would let him off to borrow a horse and rope at the few pro rodeos in New England. When he’d gotten drafted, he’d dropped off his horses at Jack Roddy’s place to sell, and noticed a two-horse aluminum trailer out in the middle of a pasture. Prior to World War II, horses were typically transported in the back of a truck. Zanetti traded a horse for that 1955 single-axle, open-top trailer, then put tires on it and a tarp across the top and used it to move to Baltimore. That launched his opening of Pete Zanetti Trailers in 1979 in Apple Valley, Calif. With the help of his fami ly, Pete built more than 270 custom aluminum horse trailers – everything from a single-axle one-horse to a triple-horse straight-ahead in six-horse and eight-horse versions. Today, they are collector’s items. Rumor has it that a Pete Zanetti-built aluminum horse trailer in the Phoenix area has more than 6 million miles on it. And the late Joe Kirk Fulton of Lubbock, Texas – the AQHA Hall-of-Famer who bred Peppy San Badger – had three Zanetti six-horse trailers that each had been pulled

more than 4 million miles. Pete was preceded in death by his youngest son, Tony Zanetti, in 2005. He is survived by his wife Jan, his son Lee, three stepchildren, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
