Rookie tie-down roper Haven Meged fights off an ankle injury to win the world title in his first

trip to the Thomas & Mack Center. Saddle bronc rider Zeke Thurston makes it title No. 2, claiming the gold buckle with $170,064 in earnings at the Wrangler NFR and $347,056 on the season. Ty Erickson had been close before, but the Montana steer wrestler wins his first world championship after earning $88,410 at the Finals and finishing the season with $234,491. Melvin “Wick” Peth , the original bullfighter and the man credited with changing the job from part-time clown to full-time protector, passes away. He was 89. Peth was the first real specialist, a pure bullfighter and the first to earn a living that way. His 37-year career ended in 1985, six years after he was part of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in Colorado Springs, Colo. 27
