Hat Trick BY DAGIN RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News B rody Cress is no stranger to shining bright on the sport’s biggest stage. He relishes the challenge of a 10-day event that rewards focus, talent, and consistency. His 2021Wrangler NFR was no different. The Hillsdale, Wyo., saddle bronc rider claimed his third NFR average title, moving into second place all-time for the most NFR average titles in saddle bronc riding. There is a metronome quality, predictability to his performance. Cress was only one of three riders to score in all 10 rounds. The Wyoming native started fast in his fifth NFR appearance, reaching the pay window each of the first three nights. The start was highlighted by a Round 2 victory with an 87.5-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s Kitty Whistle. The victory, however, didn’t change the veteran’s mindset. “I’m just focusing on taking it one horse at a time and being as strong and correct as I can on every single horse,” said Cress. “I look at it as ten one-day rodeos, not one big rodeo that’s ten rounds.” The mindset paid dividends. Cress continued to produce quality rides, scoring 85 points or more in five of the final seven rounds. In Round 9, Cress

rode Summit Pro Rodeo’s Kangaroo Lou to a 91-point ride and his second- round victory. On the eve of the final night, Cress couldn’t help but express his excitement with an opportunity at the average and world title. “I’m really excited about tomorrow (Saturday) night’s round with 15 of the best (saddle) bronc riders in the world and we’re getting to get on the horses you dream about.” The final night didn’t shake out as planned. Cress finished third place in the world standings. There was more at stake, though. Cress delivered an 87-point ride to clinch his third-NFR average title. He reflected on latest accomplishment with humility, crediting those around him. “You know it’s awesome to show up here and have a strong set of horses to give you a chance to have that success,” Cress said. “I have a great support system behind me that’s helped me be able to show up and be prepared, and it worked out.” Cress finished with 859 points on 10 head. Over the 10 rounds, he earned $183,521, bringing his season total to $325,746. The spotlight brings out the best in Cress, his NFR showing helping to produce the highest season earnings of his seven-year ProRodeo career.
