leaving Boisjoli and Gilbert as the last to rope with Gilbert just $86 ahead. “I’m pretty sure my dad knew but I told him not to tell me,” she said when asked if she was aware of the situation. “I just knew that I was ahead in the average, and I knew that even if I broke the barrier, all I had to do was catch.” Determined to do whatever she could to grab the buckle away from the teenager, Boisjoli stuck one on in 2.1 seconds to win second in the go. Gilbert answered with a 2.5, enough to grab the final check in the round and secure the average win. Gilbert’s 46.3 second time on 10 head was worth $11,313. Munsell was second at 25.1 seconds on nine head, while Boisjoli was third at 33.6 on nine. Munsell was the high money earner of the event with $20,421. Gilbert earned $19,532 after placing in five rounds during the Finals to claim her first world title by just $2,197. She won $71,654 at ProRodeos in 2021. “Every moment of my life has probably been leading up to this but there’s a lot more to come,” Gilbert said. “This isn’t going be the last one.” BRIGGS CAPTURES BARREL RACING TITLE Jordon Briggs took home her inaugural barrel racing crown, Dec. 11 at theThomas &Mack Center. Briggs earned $297,460 to finish atop the world standings. She just edged reigning three-time champion of the world Hailey Kinsel, who finished second with $281,156. Briggs clocked 136.83 seconds on 10 head, a new record in winning the average. She also added to her family’s legacy as she is the daughter of four-time WPRAWorld Champion and ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee Kristie Peterson. “Oh man it means a lot,” Briggs said. “That was my goal coming into here. I knew I had the horse that could do that, and he did it. I had so many people cheering for me. I even had bull riders I have never met cheering for me. It was great. I felt a lot of power behind me and didn’t want to let anyone down and my horse never does. “I am a very average-minded person and that is why this was my goal. I was really disappointed the first year I made it that I didn’t place in the average. That is what I had out for blood this trip was that average title. And to set the average record was icing on the cake. “Rollo has not hit a barrel all year long. He is definitely a unicorn.” For the 34th year, the ProRodeo League of Women hosted its fashion show and luncheon to raise money for the Justin Cowboys Crisis Fund, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to injured cowboys.
