EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK Hall inductees have memorable reactions

T hose familiar with the Pro Football Hall of Fame would know the name David Baker. Baker is the former President & Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who famously would travel across the country and knock on the doors of players and let them know they had been selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The PRCA doesn’t have Baker, but that didn’t take away from the reactions of the Class of 2022 ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees when they were notified the afternoon of April 12 of their inductions. As the phone was ringing the excitement in the room at the PRCA headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., was obvious. This was like notifying someone they won the Lotto. The 11-member induction class is full of star power headed up by the King of Cowboys Trevor Brazile. The induction ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. (MT), July 16 at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs. Brazile accomplished everything in his ProRodeo career winning a PRCA record 26 world championships, 14 as the all-around cowboy. Brazile won his most recent world championships in 2019 and 2020 at the National Finals Steer Roping in Mulvane, Kan. Despite all Brazile has accomplished in the rodeo arena even he was surprised by getting the call from the PRCA about his induction. “That’s a call you like to get right there,” said Brazile, 45, who still competes sparingly. “I have to say seeing the 719 (area code) I thought crap did I forget to pay something. That is awesome (to be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame). I will not miss it.” Four-time PRCA Bareback Riding World Champion Bobby Mote’s first words when told were simple. “No kidding,” he said. “It is a surprise.” Stock contractor Bennie Beutler, a ProRodeo Hall of Famer himself,

was thrilled another member of his family, the late Jake Beutler, is going into the Hall. Team roper Bobby Harris had silence at the other end of the phone and then said “All be. Boy, that’s a dream come true.” Frontier Rodeo owner Jerry Nelson was taken back about his saddle bronc and bareback horse Medicine Woman being inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. “When you can tell people to go to Colorado Springs and walk around and look (in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame) because there is one (horse) that come out of Frontier Rodeo that is a pretty special deal,” he said. Roy Duvall’s reaction when informed

by ProRodeo Hall of Fame steer wrestler Ote Berry that his prized horse Whiskey was being put in the Hall of Fame was priceless. “Ok, all right, take care of us,” Duvall said. Mel Potter, inducted as a notable, raised the bar for the entire sport of rodeo, but was humble in his response. “I’m not sure I deserve this,” Potter said. When rodeo clown Rick Young was told of his induction, you could tell in his voice, he thought someone might be pranking him. “Are you serious,” he replied. Hearing the reactions of the members of the 2022 ProRodeo Hall of Fame class was unforgettable for all involved, including myself. Congrats to the new class.

Ky Hamilton is searching for his third straight trip to the Wrangler NFR Back in Business

“It might sound a little cocky, but I have no worries about trying to make the NFR. I know what kind of competitor I am, and I know I can do that (make the NFR again). There’s no point at looking at the standings. It’s just go ride everything they run in under you and the rest will take care of itself.”

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

Trevor Hale is no stranger to the Western way of life. He’s been riding horses since he was a kid and now at age 19, he’s putting the ProRodeo world on notice. The Perryton, Texas, tie-down roper, is sitting in second place and in the running for the Resistol Rookie of the Year award. Hale has earned $9,789, thanks in part to third-place finish at the High Desert Stampede in Redmond, Ore., March 26. Overall, he is 49th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Trevor: My mom is a horse trainer, and my dad has always ran cows. So, I grew up around it and I just gradually continued to climb up the ranks in rodeo to the point I’m at now. I started riding and stuff when I was three or four years old. Then I started roping shortly after. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo?

TREVOR HALE

Trevor: I think I was around 15 when I started thinking that I might have a chance to make it. I started going to roping events and I was fortunate as a kid to be around a lot of the top ropers. I think that’s when I thought I could really do this thing. Why did you decide tie-down roping would be your event? Trevor: I do team rope a little bit but not near as seriously. I’ve always just loved tie-down, and I love good calf horses. It’s just one of my favorite events and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Who’s someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Trevor: I think Stran Smith is one of those guys, he has helped me a bunch. I got to be around him a lot as a kid and I still talk to him often. Stran and Marcos Costa have both helped me tremendously. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Trevor: I don’t think there’s one rodeo in particular that I want to win. I just want to do well at every rodeo that I go to. What have your learned during your rookie season? Trevor: I’ve learned that you always have to be positive and that there’s always another one. You have to do the best you can with what you’re dealt because you’re not always dealt with ideal best situations. Why did you decide to buy your PRCA card at this point in your career? Trevor: I just thought it was a good time to. I do feel like I have some good horses underneath me and I feel like I’m capable. I just thought it would be as good a time as ever. What has this season been like for you? Trevor: I’ve been pretty blessed with good luck so far this season. I’ve definitely learned a lot in not very much time. I just hope I can keep the ball rolling for the rest of the season. What’s your favorite restaurant? Trevor: That’s hard, it would probably be any good steakhouse. If I had to pick one, it would probably be B&B Butchers shop. Do you have a favorite sports team? Trevor: I don’t follow sports much, really rodeo is about the only sport I pay attention to. Do you have a favorite candy? Trevor: Hershey’s milk chocolate candy bar is definitely my favorite. What was the make of your first car? Trevor: My first vehicle was a Ford F-450 that I bought. What’s your favorite TV show or series? Trevor: I’m a pretty big fan of the show Ozark on Netflix. What’s your favorite holiday? Trevor: Christmas is probably my favorite holiday for religious purposes. What type of music do you like listening to? Trevor: I like all of it to be honest with you. I usually like whatever is playing and I’m going to be listening to it extra loud most likely. What do you enjoy doing in your downtime from rodeo? Trevor: I like to ride horses even when I’m rodeoing. I also like to go out and mess around with the cattle we raise.

SHORT ROUND Standout saddle bronc rider Rusty Wright out indefinitely On the Sideline

F ive-time Wrangler National Finals indefinitely after suffering multiple breaks in his right leg at the Clark County Fair & Rodeo in Logandale, Nev., April 7. Wright told ProRodeo. com he broke his ankle and suffered a spiral fracture to his tibia. In addition to those breaks, he also broke his fibula below the knee and just above his ankle. The injury occurred after his 83-point ride on Bar T Rodeo’s Hell Boy. He underwent surgery April 8 in Las Vegas. Wright said he believes the injury will cause him to miss the remainder of the ProRodeo season but didn’t rule out a possible return. Rodeo qualifier Rusty Wright will be out

PRCA ProRodeo photo by Clay Guardipee Rusty Wright will be sidelined indefinitely after suffering multiple breaks in his right left after an 83-point ride in Logandale, Nev., April 7.

Bareback rider Champion out for the year

Seven-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifying bareback rider Richmond Champion suffered an injury that will require him to miss the remainder of the 2022 ProRodeo season. Champion announced on his social media, that the results of a recent MRI showed he has a severely bulged disc in his neck that is compressing his spinal cord. The Stevensville, Mont., cowboy underwent a cervical fusion on April 1 in Austin, Texas.

Champion said he had been sore in shoulders and neck since the end of the 2021 season, but that wasn’t cause for concern for him. “In my sport, that (soreness) is nothing out of the ordinary,” he said. “I had the SportsMed team in San Antonio

run a few strength tests on me and they told me I was pretty weak in a lot of areas that I shouldn’t be. They wanted to get an MRI. I got the MRI (the second week of March) and it is showed a disc between my C3 and C4 (vertebrae) where I had a problem. Like I said, the surgery went great and a fully recovery is expected.” A year ago, Champion finished eighth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $188,739. He earned $89,793 at the 2021 Wrangler NFR presented by Teton Ridge.

“The surgery went great, and I have to be immobile for a month and they slowly get back going doing stuff,” he said. “They say it is like six months when they release you to live life normally. I’m obviously in no rush to get back at that point, so I’m just going to wait until January of 2023.”

XTREME BULLS SAN ANGELO, TEXAS

Hamilton bounces back from injury to win San Angelo Back Rolling

BY TRACY RENCK I n 2020, Australia native Ky Hamilton burst onto the PRCA bull riding scene as a rookie, finishing fourth in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. Hamilton proved he was no fluke as he made a return trip to the 2021Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge, placing eighth. Hamilton’s march to a third consecutive NFR took a detour when he suffered a lacerated kidney March 5 at a non- sanctioned PRCA event and was sidelined for a month. Now, however, he is back on the right track after winning the San Angelo (Texas) Xtreme Bulls event April 10. Hamilton won the two-head average with 175.5 points and earned $11,757. Parker Breding, the only other cowboy to make two qualified rides, finished second in the average with 170.5 points. “I’m stoked to win my first (Division 1) Xtreme Bulls buckle,” said Hamilton, 22. “It’s a cool buckle and these (Division 1) events are hard to win.” Hamilton clinched the victory by winning the short round with a 90.5-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Time Bomb. “It was a dogfight the whole time,” Hamilton said. “That bull had me working the whole time. He never let up. I had never been on him before, and I didn’t know what to expect. He was a big scary rodeo-looking bull and those are the kind I like. They look cool and they are cool to ride. “That bull was kind of mean, but when I looked up at the scoreboard, there’s no better feeling than when you go 90-plus.” Hamilton put his Texas triumphant in motion with an 85-point ride on Rafter HRodeo’s Night Prowler in the first round. “I didn’t know what (Night Prowler) would be like,” Hamilton said. “I had never been on him, but he was great to ride as well. When you get the first one knocked out then you’re feeling good for the second one.” This was the third 2022 Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event and Hamilton joins fellow winners StetsonWright (Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 19) and Josh Frost (San Antonio, Feb. 22). Speaking of Wright, that’s Hamilton traveling partner. “We went together last year, and we are going together again this season,” Hamilton said. “As the old saying goes, iron sharpens iron. You are only as good as the guys who you run with. It dang sure is good to run with a guy like (Stetson) because we’re always trying to outdo each other, and you expect a lot of each other. It also definitely helps each of us be better.” Hamilton is upbeat about what the remainder of his 2022 holds. “It might sound a little cocky, but I have no worries about trying to make the NFR,” Hamilton said. “I know what kind of competitor I am, and I know I can do that (make the NFR again). There’s no point at looking at the standings. It’s just go ride everything they run in under you and the rest will take care of itself.” At the last twoNFRs, Hamilton earned a combined $188,571 and placed in eight rounds. He split the Round 1 win at the 2021NFRwith an 87.5-point ride onHurst &TNTPro Rodeo’s Rip in Las Vegas.

Clements wins first Riggin Rally title Go Dad! BY TANNER BARTH M ason Clements has been to three Wrangler National Finals Rodeos, yet it was a weekend in April that might top the cake as his most memorable. found out he was going to be a father to a baby girl, but he won his first title at the prestigious Riggin Rally Xtreme Bareback Riding, April 10. Clements said it was 24 hours of pure joy. “It’s a really prestigious bareback riding event,” said Clements, 29. “All the best cowboys were there and that’s what you go there to compete for. “We had our gender reveal on Saturday and flew out Sunday morning to the Riggin Rally. I landed in Dallas around 10 in the morning and then went to Weatherford (Texas) and went to work.” Going to work might have been an understatement for Clements. His eight second cover on Frontier Rodeo’s Southern Star was good enough for 90 points, which is his highest scored ride in over two years of ProRodeo action. “I had never been on that horse before. That was one of those 90-point rides that you were sharp from the moment you nodded your head,” he said. “It feels good when your practice and all your preparation going into those rides shines and shows.” He said it was sigh of relief once he finally got two feet on the ground. “It took about a lap and half around the arena to get my hand out and get to the pickup man,” Clements said. “I was pointing at Bob (Talman) saying, ‘just tell me the score, the anticipation is killing me.’ He finally said 90 and it was a breath of fresh air. It felt like that was it, that was the money ride.” One day of work turned into $11,400 for Clements, bumping him back inside the Top 15 of the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. He said he’s in as good of shape as he’s ever been in throughout his eight-year PRCA career. “I feel like I am in a great position right now, I’m getting close to being in the best shape of my life,” he said. “I feel like I’m smarter with my decisions, I feel like I’m stronger with my body. I’m staying healthier as the season is going on, I’m not getting banged up and feeling crappy.” And with his first child on the way in August he feels like he has a little something more to ride for now. “I got big boots to fill now. I have a little girl coming,” Clements said. “I’m still riding for me, and I still love what I do. But there’s a bigger responsibility on the back end now to be able to rodeo and have a family and take care of them. Then they will all be able to rodeo with me one day and that’ll be even better.”

LOGANDALE, NEV.

CLARK COUNTY FAIR & RODEO

Hardwick in quest to get back to NFR in Las Vegas The Chase BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News S eth Hardwick is perennially amongst the upper echelon of bareback riders in ProRodeo but has only settled into the famous yellow bucking chutes of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo once in his long and successful career. That year, 2015, Hardwick finished third in the world standings after placing in seven rounds. Southern Nevada was kind to Hardwick again in 2022 as the TOP SCORES Driggers Nogueira

TOP MONEY WINNERS Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira ($7,052

Ranchester, Wyo., cowboy claimed the win at the Clark County Fair & Rodeo in Logandale, just about 30 minutes outside of Vegas. The rodeo returned after a two-year absence due to the COVID pandemic. “It was good to have that one back,” Hardwick said. “It’s one we always go to.” After an 86-point ride aboard Macza Pro Rodeo’s OLS Tubs Stevie Knicks, Hardwick, 33, earned $5,570 and jumped to 21st in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings, giving him a boost toward making a return trip to the Nevada desert come December. “I’ve been to Logandale quite a few times, but I don’t know that I’d ever done anything there,” Hardwick said. “It’s a great rodeo and it’s good to finally win it.” That determination has kept Hardwick pounding the road despite setbacks along the way during his 11-year pro career. He finished 24th in the standings a year ago, marking his eighth top 30 finish. A string of injuries following his 2015 NFR qualification have provided more than enough adversity for the resilient cowboy. “They say injuries are just part of the sport, but I seem to have had the injury bug a lot,” Hardwick said. He missed the entire 2016 season with a hip injury that has continued to be an issue off and on. “I’ve dealt with my hip, my bicep and even had to have my elbow scoped.” It’s a love of the sport that keeps him bouncing back again and again. “I just love rodeo,” he said. “When things are going right, there’s nothing like it. It’s a fun life, doing what you love and being out there with your friends. As long as I’m decent at it and can make a living, that’s what I’m going to do.” Hardwick definitely wants another crack at the Wrangler NFR and he’s hoping his story turns around in 2022 with the turning point being the Nevada match-up with one of ProRodeo’s most electric bucking horses in Stevie Knicks. His Logandale dancing partner has contributed to more than her share of wins in recent years including eye-popping trips with three-time World Champion TimO’Connell in San Angelo, worth 94 points, and a 93-point, Round 10 win at the 2019 NFR for to help Clayton Biglow clinch a world championship. Hardwick had danced to Stevie Knicks tune previously, recording a 90-point ride to win the Parker County Sheriff ’s Posse Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo inWeatherford, Texas, last June. “She’s incredible,” he said. “If you’ve got Stevie Knicks drawn, you’ve got an excellent shot to win the rodeo if you do your job.” Logandale was a stop on the NFR Playoff Series presented by PendletonWhisky, and the points Hardwick gathered up landed him inside the top 30 of the Playoff Series.
