Josh Frost covers three bulls to win Chute-Out BY TRACY RENCK T his wasn’t the script Josh Frost wanted to follow, but he was smiling in the end because it resulted in a win at the Cinch Chute-Out in San Angelo, Texas. Frost rode three bulls, before eventually claiming the crown with an 87.5-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Curley Bill before a sellout crowd of 5,264 spectators at the Foster Communications Coliseum. “I won the 2021 Cinch Chute-Out on that same bull, so this was cool,” Frost said. “This is great. I had some good luck and good feelings coming here to the Chute-Out and I was super excited.” Frost earned $7,500 for his Chute-Out victory but it didn’t come easy. In the long round of the Chute-Out, Frost’s first bull Stockyards Pro Rodeo’s Black Bart stumbled right out of the gate, and he was awarded a re-ride option on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Hammerhead. “I didn’t know anything about that bull,” said Frost, 26. “That bull was a handful. My ride was only 75 points, but it was dang sure a lot of work to get that 75.” The 75-point ride allowed Frost to finish in the top three in the long round and qualify for the three-man finals. “I figured it was a pretty good sign to draw (Curley Bill) in the (finals) because I won this rodeo on that bull last year,” Frost said. “It got a little Western at the end, but I kept my hand closed and came out on top. I try and give 100 percent every time I nod my head. I knew the bull and I knew he kind of opened at the end and kind of caught me. I was trying to ride the outside a little more and he bucked harder than he did last time for sure. He got me down around the inside and I was just trying to get back to the middle. It was a good thing I didn’t have to ride for 8-and-a-half seconds because I don’t know if I would have made the whistle. “I was there for eight and came out with a pretty good score.” Frost won the 2021 Cinch Chute-Out in San Angelo with an 88-point ride on Curley Bill. Following his ride in 2022 on Curley Bill, Frost had to wait and see if his score would hold up against the final two riders – Ernie Courson Jr. and Ky Hamilton and both failed to make it eight seconds. “To hear the crowd (after the ride) feels great,” Frost said. “The crowd is so loud you can’t even hear the whistle in this building. You keep riding. You don’t ever hear the whistle in here. It is electric.” Frost moved up to second in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $97,410. He’s coming off a career-best year in 2021 when he finished second in the world standings with $363,353. Bull rider Sage Kimzey won his seventh world championship in eight years, finishing

The Randlett, Utah, cowboy has high hopes for the 2022 season. “This is a marathon not a sprint in the regular season,” Frost said. “Sage (Kimzey) rides outstanding and there’s a reason he’s a seven-time champion. I gave it a good run last year and the big thing is staying consistent all year long. It is a marathon. At the end of the day, it comes down to who can ride the most bulls.” Complete results/Page 58 with $411,465.
