MOUNTAIN VALLEY STAMPEDE HEBER CITY, UTAH.

Cowboy claims adjuster splits win Claim It!

BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News H udsonWallace is a cowboy first and foremost, and he hopes that’s how he’s known by his peers. The George West, Texas, native is hoping to add “Wrangler National Finals Rodeo” in front of that moniker one day and inched a bit closer to that goal with a share of the win in the tie-down roping at the Mountain Valley Stampede Rodeo in Heber City, Utah, Aug. 7. The win came thanks to a smooth run which stopped the clock in 8.1 seconds, good enough to tie John Douch for the win and $4,399 apiece. It also scored him valuable points toward the ProRodeo Tour presented by PendletonWhisky. “It was kind of a blur,” saidWallace, 26. “We roped at (a non-PRCA-sanctioned event) that morning and then jumped on a plane, actually, two planes. We got into Salt Lake City at 7:15.” Though tight on time, the 50-mile trip over the mountains to Heber was quickly knocked out of the way, leaving Wallace with enough time to get into his normal, pre- competition routine before roping his way to victory. “I just wanted to make a practice pen-type run; I knew if I didn’t make any mistakes, I could win some money ... and I really needed to win something,” Wallace said. “Mundorf cattle and Utah rodeos have treated me pretty well.” Wallace moved to 38th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings and, perhaps more importantly, to 24th in the ProRodeo Tour presented by PendletonWhisky. The Top 24 will advance to the highly lucrative ProRodeo Tour Finale to be held in Salinas, Calif., on the final weekend of the regular season, Sept. 23-26. “I still haven’t taken my eyes off making the Finals just yet,” Wallace said. “There are still lots of rodeos and a lot of money left, and a little momentum can add up quickly.” Wallace knows how important the Tour Finale will be. “The Tour Finale could bring a guy from out of the woodwork and into the Finals,” he said. “I plan to try to just keep knocking them down and I’ll either make the Finals or have enough won to get into all the big-building rodeos next winter, and we’ll take another shot next year.” Wallace grew up ranching and still spends his time away from rodeo working cows. He cites roping in the branding pen as his start, and he proceeded through the ranks of youth, high school and college rodeos. After graduating with a degree in agricultural engineering with a minor in ag business, he embarked on a rodeo career, but 2021 is the first time he’s been able to stay on the road throughout the season thanks in part to a job as a claims adjuster for Allcat Claims. “It’s fun. Rodeoing, you don’t go east much, just maybe Florida, but with this job I’ve had the chance to travel to the East Coast, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,” Wallace said. “It’s definitely different, but it’s fun to be able to travel that way too.”
