BAKER, MONT.

Clay Guardipee photos Team roping header Levi Simpson, at left, ropes at the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo with his partner Shay Dixon Carroll, above, Aug. 13. The duo won the rodeo with a 4.4-second run.

“Levi and I get along well,” Carroll said. “Our horses fit together, and we have a real nice run that seems to be fast enough and consistent. We are working toward getting to the NFR. Every year you have to improve your craft because everybody else is getting better. I took a couple of years trying to be a header in 2017 and 2018 and switched back to being a heeler in 2019. I’m just a better heeler than I am a header. I’ve done it longer and spent more time working at it.” Simpson rode his horse Stetson, 13, in Baker. “I’ve ridden Stetson for the last eight years,” he said. “He didn’t get to go to Vegas (in 2016). The horse I won the world on was Frasier, and he’s 26 this year.” Carroll, who is riding DMAC, 9, said staying focused is key to a run. “You’re not competing against everybody else (out there),” he said. “They have no bearing on what you do. ... We’ve put in the time, and we believe we can be fast enough. You just have to have confidence.”

4 Rodeo records set at the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo in Baker, Mont., Aug. 15-16. Marks were broken for total payout ($211,398), tie-down roping (7.7 seconds), steer wrestling (3.2 seconds by Dylan Schroeder, Cade Staton and Riley Reiss) and steer roping (9.2 seconds by Tuf Cooper and Reo Lohse).

Hanchey record Tie-down roper Shane Hanchey, the 2013 world champion, is looking to solidify his 11th consecutive trip to the Wrangler NFR, and he may have done that in Baker. Hanchey won with a rodeo-record run of 7.7 seconds and earned a rodeo-best $6,162. The previous record was 8.2 seconds, set by Boe Brown in 2015. Hanchey moved up to sixth in the world standings with $50,412. “This is probably going to get me into the NFR,” Hanchey said. “Us tie-down ropers, we’re numbers guys, and anything over $50,000, with the amount of money left on the table, we figure that’s probably a shoo-in.”
