CATCHING UP WITH ... HERBERT THERIOT

Fistful of Dollars

Theriot won 1994 world title by $14

BY MATT NABER H erbert Theriot has never had a job, or so the 1994 world champion tie-down roper says. Nearly 30 years after winning the world title by a margin of $14 over eventual ProRodeo Hall of Famer Joe Beaver, Theriot remains connected to the sport through family, friends and business – and it’s all fun. “I really never had a job,” Theriot laughed. “They say if you enjoy doing what you’re doing then it’s not a job, so you could say I don’t have a job because I love what I do.”

Theriot won $1.4 million during his 20 years of competition, $151,922 of which earned him a gold buckle in 1994. “It really truly was weird,” Theriot said. “I thought if I would win the world that it’d be a different feeling. I guess what really stuck to my mind was all the practicing and staying focused just proved if that’s what you do then you can accomplish what you want. I feel like that was the only year that I rodeoed in the PRCA and stayed focused on one thing, and that was roping calves.” He made 12 trips to the National Finals Rodeo, 10 times in tie- down roping (1988-90, 1993-94, 1996 and 1998-2001) and twice in steer wrestling (1996 and 1998).
