Cooper wins Caldwell Night Rodeo for the second time Tuf’s Night BY MATT NABER T uf Cooper won the Caldwell (Idaho) Night Rodeo for the second time on the same horse and with identical runs in the first two rounds. With back-to-back 9.0-second runs followed by a 10.0-second run in the final round, Cooper won the 2019 Caldwell rodeo in 28.0 seconds on three head while riding Circle Star Ranch’s American Quarter Horse, Topaz. In 2014, Cooper and Topaz won Caldwell in 25.0 seconds on three head. ALL-AROUND COWBOY Riley Richard Warren, $3,046, tie-down roping and team roping BAREBACK RIDING TOP SCORES Warren

“I’m less fundamental than most, but she’s able to fit what I do,” Cooper said. “She sees all the wild and fast stuff I do, and she takes care of everything else.” Winning $8,785 in Caldwell helped the 29-year-old cowboy jump from sixth to fourth in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings for tie-down roping as of Aug. 19. “We’re in the fourth quarter of the season,” Cooper said. “It’s been a solid season for me and very challenging as well. I had a lot of opportunities to win rodeos this year, and it’s good to capitalize on a big opportunity in Caldwell in the fourth quarter and move into the last bit of the season.” Cooper’s also on track to qualify for the ProRodeo Tour Finale, sitting 14th in the Tour standings following Caldwell. “It doesn’t matter what position you’re in as long as you’re in there,” Cooper said. “It’s comforting to know you will have a chance for big money at a big rodeo.” Cooper has scored major wins in both of his events this season, having won the tie-down roping at the Clark County Fair & Rodeo in Logandale, Nev., and the steer roping at the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo. “It’s been a really solid season,” Cooper said, noting that he’s in the top five for both events. “The top five in anything is really good, and obviously you want to be first at the end of the season. When the last day of the (regular) season is over, that’s just the fourth quarter and what we’re pushing for is to capitalize on the opportunities coming up.” Sitting fourth in the all-around, tie-down roping and steer roping standings after Caldwell has the Texas cowboy looking ahead as he pursues his first steer roping world title, four tie-down roping world title (2011-12, 2014) and second all-around world title (2017). “There are some good rodeos in the Northwest,” Cooper said. “They’ve been upping their added money and keep trying to make it better for us cowboys, and we really appreciate it.” With Caldwell in the books, Cooper hit the road for rodeos in Kennewick, Wash., Bremerton, Wash., and San Juan Capistrano, Calif. “You have to work hard every day, be the hardest worker and just try to do the best I can do in every opportunity I can get in every moment,” Cooper said.
