LEA COUNTY PRCA RODEO LOVINGTON, N.M. Cabral wins Lovington in record time Mr. Tour-ist BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI A s steer wrestler Cody Cabral checked out the ProRodeo Tour standings he decided he would enter the Lea County PRCA Rodeo in Lovington, N.M., Aug. 7-10. So, he and traveling partner Juan Alcazar flew down from the Northwest. It turned out to be a wise decision.

Cabral not only won the rodeo, he also broke the two-head rodeo record, posting an average time of 7.3 seconds. Cabral topped former traveling partner K.C. Jones’ record by one-tenth of a second. “Heck, I didn’t even know about it (the record),” said Cabral, who earned $5,263 at the rodeo and valuable ProRodeo Tour points. “Lovington is always a fast rodeo. That’s super cool, and getting the win is obviously always good. I’ve had some luck there in the past. But I’ve never been able to get the win. The Hilo, Hawaii, cowboy who now resides in Milton-Freewater, Ore., tied for second in both the first round (3.9 seconds) and second round (3.4). On that same weekend, Cabral also won the Omak (Wash.) Stampede to cash in for $2,634 and earned $1,370 at the Bozeman (Mont.) Stampede. “Before Lovington, I had a couple weeks that were really rough,” he said. “But I had a great week last week between Lovington and Omak.” As of Aug. 12, Cabral was 28th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $42,137. He was just outside the Top 24 in the Tour standings, sitting in 28th with 1,999.25 points, fewer than 50 points outside the 24th spot. Cabral is trying to qualify for the ProRodeo Tour Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 5-8. With only the top 24 of each event qualifying for the Finale, Cabral knows there’s a chance to win some money in Puyallup and to gain ground in the race for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “When it was time to enter Lovington, I looked at the standings and I was 28th or 30th, so I was like, I need to go to Tour rodeos,” Cabral said. “That’s why we split up our buddy group and our rig, and our horses stayed up north. Juan and I flew down to Lovington to try and get some Tour points. Luckily, that did work out.
