“I hold that place close to my heart,” he said. “It’s been a home base for a long time.” For Medlin, this year’s trip to Hermiston was redemptive. “I had a chance to win it a couple of years ago but messed up the second round, so I was glad I was able to finish it and win,” Medlin said. The duo teamed up at the beginning of summer when both needed partners. “He’s really fast, and when I do my job and set them up for him, he nails them,” Crawford said of Medlin. “He tends to business and has a good horse. We live close by and he’s hungry, and being out here as long as I have, having someone hungry keeps you driven.” Both ropers praised their horses for making their Hermiston win possible – Crawford’s 12-year-old, American Quarter Horse Nastee and Medlin’s 10-year-old horse, Drago. “He’s pretty good and he’s filthy,” Crawford laughed about Nastee. “If he was a kid, he’d never make his bed and always be dirty. He’s just a special horse, one of the best I’ve had.” “I’ve ridden Drago for the last three or four years,” Medlin said. “He just fits me. He’s cowy and easy to ride and forgiving, and anyone can get along with him.”

If the final leg of the season goes well, Crawford could make his 10th Wrangler NFR qualification (2005-07, 2009-10, 2012-14 and 2017). For Medlin, team roping at the Wrangler NFR is a family tradition, as his dad, Jeff Medlin, qualified in 1991 and 1996.
