Cress wins in Baker with record ride

Saddle bronc rider Brody Cress has been on a heater the past month and that didn’t change at the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo in Baker, Mont. Cress had a 90-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s High Valley on Aug. 17 to set a rodeo record. The previous record of 89 points was set by Cody DeMoss earlier at the rodeo. “I actually got on that horse one other time this year (at an unsanctioned PRCA rodeo) and had an 88.5-point ride, so I knew she was a really good horse and I had a really good chance to do well,” said Cress, 23. And he did. “That’s one of those horses that gives you all the chances you need as long as you don’t stub your toe and do your part,” Cress said. “She’s big and she’s strong and you could dang-sure feel that going across there, but as

long as you stay ahead of her it will usually work out. It’s awesome (to get the rodeo record). With all the hard work we put in throughout the year to get on that caliber of horse and do your job and be 90 points, that kind of gives back to us a little bit for everything we are putting into it. It gets you pumped up and excited to keep going.” Cress has qualified for the last twoWrangler National Finals Rodeos and placed a career-best second in 2017. With his $3,976 victory in Baker, Cress was 15th in the Aug. 19 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. “I just have to keep grinding,” Cress said. “There are a lot of rodeos left, and it is still tight from 25th place to 10th. “I just have to keep my head down and keep going and not get comfortable.”

CANBY RODEO CANBY, ORE.

PRO TOUR ROUNDUP Martin opens Northwest trip with Canby victory Leading up to the Canby (Ore.) Rodeo, steer wrestler Tristan Martin had been banged up, forcing him out of several rodeos. But after doing well in Sikeston, Mo., and Lawton, Okla., Martin decided to head confidence and says that I should stay out here.” Martin was riding Houdini, Denver Berry’s 10-year-old horse. “I’m riding him up here in the Northwest everywhere,” Martin said. “He’s easy. You get in the box and he gives you a chance every time.” As of Aug. 19, Martin had earned $28,556, putting him inside

to the Northwest and try his luck up there. Good decision. Martin tied for first in the first round to earn $1,516 with a 4.4-second run, then added the two-head average title with a time of 9.1 seconds, earning another $2,432. “It’s good, because honestly, I didn’t know if I was going to come up here to the Northwest,” said Martin, 23. “I ended up booking a plane ticket the day before. Especially coming out here the first week and winning one of the biggest rodeos of the week definitely boosts your

the top 50 in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. He was 33rd in the ProRodeo Tour standings, nine places away from getting into the Top 24 and qualifying for the ProRodeo Tour Finale in Puyallup, Wash. “That (Puyallup) is why I ended up coming,” Martin said. “I think after Canby it ought to boost me up pretty good. It was good to do the Tour rodeo to get as many points as I can to secure that.”
