IN HIS OWNWORDS: SPENCER MITCHELL MITCHELL SHOOTING FOR RETURNTO FINALS

On behalf of my traveling partners, Laine Herl and Tom Littell, we wanted to express our gratitude to a couple of rodeo committees that went over the top to help out cowboys during our summer run: the Gunnison (Colo.) Cattlemen’s Days and the Edgewood (Iowa) Pro Rodeo Days. Both committees did so much extra to make us feel right at home. From the time we pulled in to park, our experience at these two rodeos was amazing. Edgewood experienced six inches of rain that week, but we couldn’t tell when we were in the arena because they covered it with a tarp. They made it easy for us to get in and get out. We appreciated their hard work. At Gunnison, we pulled in, and a committeeman was there to help us park. They brought us hay for our horses, fed us, then helped us get a repairman for our trailer even though we arrived at night. The chairman of the rodeo committee thanked us for being there, and the rodeo offered bonus money in the perf, which was great for contestants. It all helps us get down the road a little easier. Sincerely, Dru Melvin Melvin expresses thanks to committees LETTERTOTHE EDITOR I turned 30 this year (in April). It was good. We didn’t do much for my birthday. The Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo was going on close to the house, so the whole family got to be around the same area. It was pretty nice. My wife, Whitney, and 14-month-old son, Broc, are with me right now up in the Northwest traveling with me to rodeos. When we were thinking of names for our son, I didn’t think there was another name we needed to look for. I know we’ve all thought about him (late partner Broc Cresta) a lot. As soon as we found out we were having a boy it stuck with us that’s what it was going to be. I’ve gotten to rope with some great partners all year, between Jason Duby and Clay O’Brien and now roping with Russell Cardoza. I’ve messed up a lot of good opportunities and dang sure learned a lot and put some nice horses back together again. It’s been a successful year so far as long as we can finish it off strong. I learned a lot roping with Clay as far as a person’s mental game, not to lose your composure. Even if everything is going bad, keep yourself on a positive note and keep your head up. It was a great opportunity for me. When I was younger I might have been hotter headed. But between having a child and Team roping header Spencer Mitchell, of Orange Cove, Calif., is hoping to get back to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for the first time since 2012. As of Aug. 20, he was in good position. In the PRCA | RAM World Standings, Mitchell was in 13th place with $53,686. He ranked 20th in the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Standings with 390 points. After wins with heelers Jason Duby and Clay O’Brien Cooper this season, Mitchell has teamed with Russell Cardoza to close out the season.

handling all that and having the opportunity to rope with Clay it dang sure helped my mental game. And Broc helps me put things in perspective. A guy can miss a steer, and when you get back to the trailer Broc is still there smiling. At this point, he doesn’t know if I caught or missed, he’s just happy to see his dad back at the trailer with him. It’s kind of hard to stay mad when he’s smiling at you. It’s neat to have the Wrangler Tour back to the points system. It makes the Tour mean something again. I’d gone before when they used to have it. I think the way they’re running it with the Tour points and having rodeos add more money and getting the bigger rodeos to step up opens a lot of opportunities. Clay and I had success and did well. But he started a little behind me in the standings. So, our point of when we were going to go home for us was a little bit different. I was just close enough in the standings. I didn’t feel like I could afford to take a week off. Russell and I were talking about it one day, and we’re lifelong friends. I have three horses I’ve been riding on and off. I have a solid mare, Megan, who might not be the fastest, but she gives me an opportunity to win every time I ride her. She’s my go-to right now. I also have Houdini, who I purchased from a friend of mine in California, who I’ve been riding quite a bit and is really stepping up to the plate and is an exceptional horse. I also have Richard, who I’ve ridden on and off the last few years. I won Oakdale (Calif.) on him. He belongs to my sister in Oklahoma. I’ve won some larger rodeos this year. I’ve been able to switch through partners and still have some success. It feels like there are a lot of people behind me and supporting me all the way through. This season, after taking last year off and having my son, seems a lot more meaningful to me.

GRILLE COWBOY

JAMES “TY” ARNOLD, 22, got some valuable experience his first year of competing on his PRCA card, roping with veteran header Charly Crawford. Because of it, Arnold topped the PRCA | Resistol TeamRoping Heeler Rookie Standings with $23,478 as of Aug. 20. The Midway, Texas, cowboy competes for SamHouston State University on a rodeo scholarship, studying agricultural business and science. Arnold attributes his success to family and rodeo mentors.

WITH AMBE BAILLIE PSN

How did you start team roping? Ty: I started when I was little, my dad and uncle introduced me to it. My entire family enjoys rodeo and horses. We live in a good spot in Madisonville (Texas) near (team ropers) Justin Davis and Colby Lovell, who’ve helped me. I also went to a few Clay O’Brien Cooper roping schools. When I was 12, I lost a thumb from roping, but I’m left-handed (for everything else), so it didn’t mess up anything. I just hold the rope differently, between my pointer and middle fingers, the same way (team roping header) Bubba Buckaloo holds it. Do you enjoy heeling more than heading? Ty: I started out heading because naturally, it’s easier for a kid. But I always wanted to heel – I’d head for a week and then go back to heeling. I’ve worked hard at heeling and have continued to get better at it. Why did you buy your PRCA card? Ty: After roping throughout high school, I was able to get a full-ride scholarship to a junior college in Wharton, Texas, and then received another full-ride at Sam Houston State University (in Huntsville, Texas). I have a passion for team roping and thought I might be good enough for ProRodeo. I figured I should go as far with it as I can before trying something else. How do you balance rodeo and school? Ty: Luckily, I’ve been able to do well enough in rodeo that I haven’t had to get a job, and my mom has helped me out tremendously with my studies. I try to schedule classes in the morning and be done by lunch so that later in the day, after it’s cooled down, I can rope for 2-3 hours. How did you partner up with nine-time NFR qualifier Charly Crawford? Ty: (Team roping heeler) Wesley Thorp texted me and told me he (Crawford) needed a partner. We started practicing together, went to rodeos nearby, and it ended up working out. Charly is one of the best headers out there. He knows all the aspects of team roping and where to set your goals. What would you like to improve on? Ty: I need to work on my position. I’ve been getting help from (Wrangler National Finals Rodeo team roping heeler) Joseph Harrison on knowing where to put myself to do the best job that I can, and every rodeo is a little different. How are you feeling about the season?

Ty: I wish I could have done better … but it’s not over yet. The next rodeos I’m competing at are in Kansas and then I’m going to two in Oklahoma and roping with my college partner Mason Thatcher. Then, I’ll finish the year competing with Colby Lovell. Has switching partners been a good thing? Ty: Charly is in the Northwest, and I’m about to start my last semester of school, so I’m competing at rodeos close to home. It’s been OK to switch because they’re guys I’ve roped with before. I want to make sure I do good at the rest of the rodeos I’ll be competing at. Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

Ty: My dad (pictured second from right). He’s always kept me on good horses, and whatever I’ve needed, he’s had for me. He works hard every day to provide for our family, allowing us to do what we love. He’s helped me stay mentally

strong and good with the Lord. It’s easy to stay motivated when you have someone in your life who helps you in every way you need them.

What is a guilty pleasure for you? Ty: My mom gets on to me for drinking Red Bull. It’s nice to have it at night when you’re driving, but she doesn’t like it. Outside of rodeo, what do you like to do for fun? Ty: I like to hunt hogs. My granddad has a bunch of dogs, and we like to go together. I enjoy the sport of it, getting to go and have fun with my family. What’s your favorite thing to spend money on? Ty: Ropes and tack. I enjoy getting new stuff and putting it on my horse. What’s something important to know about team roping?

Ty: Team roping is a very humbling sport. When you think you’ve got it figured out there’s always something you can work on and improve. Do you plan on using your college degree? Ty: I’m not sure. Besides rodeo, I want to raise cows and have my own ranch one day.

TY ARNOLD

ProRodeo Hall of Fame rodeo clown/bullfighter Chuck Henson passed away Aug. 11 in Tucson, Ariz. He was 87. Henson was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1995. Henson was born with rodeo blood in his veins on Feb. 4, 1931, in Arcadia, Fla., where his parents – Charlie and Margie – were competing at a rodeo. Margie was one of the famous “Riding Greenoughs.” Henson competed in five events, but considered bull riding his forte. In the mid-1950s, he traded his boots and hat for baggy pants and a red wig, and his clown/bullfighter career took off, lasting into the 1980s. Henson worked the 1967 and 1971 National Finals Rodeo. He served on the PRCA’s Board of Directors as contract member director from 1974-77. He was PRCA Clown of the Year in 1977. R OUND THE SHORT Legend Passes Hall of Fame clown/bullfighter Henson dies at 87 “The big rodeos were a little bit tougher to work because you were out in the middle of this big arena,” Henson said in a 2009 article in The Ketchpen . “I like the small rodeos, where the crowd was right up next to me and I could play with them. I always like to hear the little kids giggle.” When Henson hung up his rodeo clothes, he took on Hollywood as a stuntman double. Of his rodeo career he said, “It made me feel mighty good when some kid who had drawn a bad bull would say, ‘Boy, I’m glad to see you here.’” Henson compared bullfighting to football. “You fake a bull quite a bit, use your hands to grab hold or to push off,” Henson said in the March 19, 1980, issue of ProRodeo Sports News . “You just always keep moving. If you are standing still and he hits you, it’s like breaking an egg. If you are moving, he just boosts you along a little faster or tosses you in the air a little. Sometimes a little has become a lot. I’ve been in orbit a couple of times.” Henson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy; daughters Nancy Jane (Jerry) Dorenkamp and Leigh Ann (Eric) Billingsley; and granddaughters Kaylee and Rayna Billingsley. ‘Little Champions Arena’ opens at Hall of Fame The “Little Champions Arena” children’s exhibit opened at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo., Aug. 17. It features a dress-up area, bouncy animals, a bucking chute, barrels, roping dummies, kids ropes and other rodeo-related toys. “A kid’s area has been something we have been lacking here at the Hall, so it is exciting to see that we have one now,” said Kent Sturman, director of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. The arena, in Theater II of the Hall of Fame, will be a permanent exhibit and is set up to resemble an actual rodeo arena with seating for parents and others to watch as the children act out their favorite rodeo event. Sponsors and donors who provided items for the exhibit include Priefert Rodeo and Ranch Equipment, Big Country Toys, Resistol, and Cactus Ropes. Additional items will be added to the exhibit in the coming weeks. Henson
