FIESTA DAYS RODEO

SPANISH FORK, UTAH

Back on Track Tie-down roper Zack Jongbloed

TOP SCORES TOP MONEY

BY BRADY RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News O nly 24, tie-down roper Zack Jongbloed knows the road to success in rodeo alternates between paved and gravel. Last season, the rising star zoomed to his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo berth as if he were on the toll with nary a stoplight. This season has featured potholes, U-turns, and steep grades for the tie-down roper. “I think it’s just rodeo. Sometimes the calf beats you. Sometimes you beat yourself. I just kept telling myself to stay positive,” said Jongbloed of his uneven start to the season that included some empty events and tough luck. “I have a great support group of family and friends. They keep me motivated. And I also feel like I am strong mentally. You can’t just let one tough weekend define how you are doing.” Jongbloed has found his traction. He won the title at the Fiesta Days Rodeo in Spanish Fork, Utah, clocking 15.6 seconds on two-head. He earned $8,923 on the key stop on the Playoff Series. “That was an important rodeo for me. Before the summer, it had been a grind. I had been winning $1,000 here and a $1,000 there. But after Spanish Fork, it really gave me the momentum I needed to get going this season,” said Jongbloed, who hails from Iowa, La. “I drew two pretty good calves. And really the key, well, I just think it was my time to win. It all played out well, where it allowed me to do my job.” Jongbloed made a splash a year ago. He finished sixth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $233,962. He earned $108,711 at the Wrangler NFR. That success is what separates him from most. Of course, he likes to clear his head with a hunting trip for deer from time-to-time in Louisiana and Texas. But he’s a cowboy with a purpose. He knows that if he follows the process, trusts his preparation, that results will follow. So, with roughly two months remaining in the season, the vision has narrowed. “Absolutely. I never lost focus of my goal. My goal is always the NFR,” Jongbloed said. “It’s about staying positive, not letting anything get you down. And shoot winning is such a big adrenaline rush. You can go to 20 rodeos and maybe only win one time. But it’s that one time that gets the motor going and there’s nothing you’d rather do than do it again.” gains traction with Spanish Fork win
