Statler Wright claims Fiesta title Family Affair BY TANNER BARTH S tatler Wright grew up in one of the most storied families in ProRodeo history, but at the end of the day it’s all him when he climbs on the back of a 1,500-pound horse. And he’s showing he can be next in the line of Wrights to find success in the PRCA. The 18-year-old’s most recent feat came by FIESTA DAYS RODEO SPANISH FORK, UTAH

winning the Fiesta Days Rodeo in Spanish Fork, Utah, where he matched up with Frontier Rodeo’s Yellowstone for 87.5 points. It’s a horse the Wright family was more than familiar with. “I knew a little bit about the horse going in. Ryder had been 88 on him there in 2018 and he won the rodeo on that horse,” Statler said. “Then just over the Fourth of July Spencer got on that same horse in Cody (Wyo.) and won that rodeo. “I really had to lift and charge with that horse. I knew she was snappy and didn’t look really powerful. But if you get behind on that she will for sure let you know you aren’t doing stuff right. My family was there as well and when I get all of their help it really calms my nerves” Wright’s quest toward his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is in full swing. Since July 1, he has earned $19,424, which included a $8,545 payday for his win Spanish Fork. He said his goal since buying his card was to make the Finals and he’s one step closer to making that dream a reality. He’s currently 26th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with his sights set on Las Vegas. “Ever since I got my permit my goal was to buy my card and make the Finals,” he said. “Just the other day I went to the high school finals, and everyone thinks because I’m still in high school that I’m not going to try and make the Finals this year and I’ll wait. “Shoot, I think that there’s no sense in waiting, I’m ready to go. I feel like I’m ready to compete on that stage. I’ve proven to myself that I can ride these horses, they are no different than what I’ve always got on. It’s just a bigger stage with more money, the horses are the same.” With just two months left to go in the regular season he plans to keep his approach the same. If it turns out a trip to the NFR is the end result he’ll be ecstatic, but if not it’s back to work next season. “I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing and listening to my brothers and my dad. Hopefully everything will turn out in my favor and if it doesn’t, oh well.”
