Bull rider Trevor Reiste eyes NFR bucking chutes after Ogden win

BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News T revor Reiste has one big goal this season and one simple plan to get it done. “I’m just trying to ride one bull at a time and get back to those yellow bucking chutes,” Reiste, 29, said. The Linden, Iowa, cowboy is seeking his second trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo after making his first appearance there in 2017. Reiste took a step toward that goal with a big win at the Ogden (Utah) Pioneer Days Rodeo. Reiste won $6,035 after earning an 89.5-point ride aboard Dakota Rodeo’s Mr. Winston. The ride marked Reiste’s first time aboard the bull. His 89.5 points represent the highest-marked ride that has been recorded aboard Mr. Winston during his ProRodeo career. “I’d never been on that bull, but I have some friends in the Midwest who knew him pretty well,” he said. “Reid Oftedahl won Clear Lake (S.D.) on him, so I had a little idea about him.” Oftedahl had an 88-point ride on the bull to win the Crystal Springs Xtreme Bulls stop back on June 22. “I figured he would fit me pretty good. I like bulls who rear, and kick and I don’t really care which way they go,” Reiste said. In fact, the bull went right into Reiste’s hand right out of the chute before reversing direction toward the end of the eight seconds. “It turned out pretty good.” Reiste says he likes to research his draws just to “know if they have any tricks,” but in other areas, he’d just as soon not clog up his process with too much information. For example, Reiste’s Ogden success – his third rodeo win of the year – lands him 22nd in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings and helps creep him up in the NFR Playoff Series Standings as well . . . but he’d just as soon not know that. “I don’t watch that stuff, but I can’t really ignore it, I get informed by my family about it a lot,” he laughed. Reiste competed in Ogden during the first performance July 20 and had to wait through four more performances to see if it would hang on to the first-place check. One possible ace up the sleeve for many bubble contestants like Reiste could be the $1 million NFR Playoff in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 8-11. Only the top 23 in the NFR Playoff Standings will compete in Puyallup and the huge purse could help put a cowboy over the top and into the Top 15 for an NFR back number. The Ogden win was big for Reiste’s position in the NFR Playoff Series presented by PendletonWhisky, another step toward the bigger goal. “I’m going to everything I can get into,” he said including as many of the remaining NFR Playoff Series stops as possible.
