SNAKE RIVER STAMPEDE NAMPA, IDAHO
Back in the Mix
Nampa title has steer wrestler Curtis Cassidy back in hunt for NFR again BY TANNER BARTH C urtis Cassidy put everything on the line in Nampa, Idaho, and it paid off for the seven-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. Cassidy shared the Snake River Stampede title with ody Cabral, finishing with 12.3 seconds on three head. The veteran cowboy fromDonalda, Alberta, capped off the winning week in Idaho on July 24 with a 4.0-second run in the championship round. The split victory has Cassidy’s season back on track as he sets his sights on returning to Las Vegas in December. “I’ve been picking away this season little by little especially the last few months, I just hadn’t been able to get that big win until now,” said Cassidy, 42. “This one was great, but honestly Calgary the week before Nampa kick started things for me. I won $19,000 there and then went to Nampa and had good steers. Now, it kind of feels like I’m starting to get on a little bit of a roll.” The recent success has bumped Cassidy back into the conversation for this year’s NFR. He is sitting 18th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $34,792. Even with the recent surge in the standings he acknowledged the early summer lull was tough. Cassidy has qualified for the NFR in 2002, 2008-10, 2014, 2018 and 2020. “Sometimes you try your hardest, make sure your horse is good, and everything’s perfect and you still can’t win,” Cassidy said. “Then sometimes the seas part, the page turns over, and all of sudden everything just starts clicking. It comes down to a change in luck.” He says a two-week stretch like that can come at any time when you’re riding the quality of horses he is. “I’ve been riding Tanner Milan’s horse (Eddie) quite a bit and then of course I own Tyson the (Purina Horse of the Year presented by AQHA in steer wrestling) last year,” Cassidy said. “We’ve got some really good horses to ride and that’s No. 1 more than anything in my book, is just having good horsepower.” July is one of those months that typically makes or breaks a guy’s season. For Cassidy, it put him right back into the hunt, but he knows there’s still a lot of rodeoing left. “This month is hit or miss, you can either just kill them and make the NFR in a month or it can be a long hot month, as well,” Cassidy said. “Basically, what it amounts to is when they give you your chance you need to be ready to win and take advantage of it. Don’t ride the highs too high, don’t ride the lows too low. Hopefully I can keep the ball rolling the rest of the way.” $7,671 Money earned by tie-down roper/team roper Marty Yates on his way to capturing the all- around title at the 2021 Snake River Stampede.
