KANSAS’ BIGGEST RODEO PHILLIPSBURG, KAN. Rookie bull rider Winn claims Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo title Big Winn-er BY MATT NABER R ookie bull rider ShadWinn is focused on the future and thrilled to see his name among the top 50 of the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings for the first time. With two months left in the regular season, he’s hoping to stay there and qualify for next season’s big rodeos.

That goal became more attainable thanks toWinn winning Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg, posting an 84.5-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Make My Day on Aug. 1. “My goal originally was to get rookie of the year, qualify for the NFR and ride all 10 bulls there,” saidWinn, 21. “I like to set my goals high, so it gives me something to chase after.” The Utah cowboy had taken a year off from bull riding and was trying other rodeo events in Texas when his childhood friend Josh Frost encouraged him to come back to Utah and ride bulls. Frost competed at the 2019Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and his brother, Joe, made the Finals in 2014-18. “Josh said I’d make more money riding bulls,” Winn said. “He’s a great guy, and I’ve been happy to go with him. We keep each other fired up and in a good mindset.” Steve Woolsey and fellow rookie Chance Ekins are also in the rig. “They’re teaching me all kinds of things every day, like little life tricks and pointers when riding bulls,” Winn said. While on his permit, Winn finished the 2019 season second only to Stetson Wright in the Wilderness Circuit Standings with $29,810. “During my permit year, I only rodeoed in the circuit and slipped into some bigger rodeos due to winning that much last year,” Winn said. “That got me fired up, kept my engine going and set off a good year for me to get into these bigger rodeos.” The rookie held his own at some of the toughest competitions of the season, picking up $2,000 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and an additional $1,500 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Xtreme Bulls. Although he’s a rookie, Winn has plenty of experience thanks to his parents hosting junior rodeos and growing up down the road from Frost. “It was the only thing we had to do, we’d buck steers every day,” Winn said. “It was pretty cool.” Winn’s Phillipsburg efforts were worth a $3,976 boost in the world standings as well as ProRodeo Tour points. “Honestly, it helped me stay on the road and get into the rest of these rodeos,” Winn said. “Hopefully I’ll keep winning and see if I can slip up closer to the top of the rookie standings.”
