Webb got off to a roaring start by capturing a pair of go-round wins, earning a staggering $77,374 in two nights. In a blink, Mayfield’s lead dwindled to just $16,193. His style matched the reward. “Roping is so easy when you are Riley Webb,” ProRodeo Hall of Famer Joe Beaver said. “You just show up right now, nod your head and then when you get there that’s when you take your victory lap, and you get your paycheck and that’s when you know you’re rolling baby.” Webb never looked back. The once prey stood back in a familiar spot as he zeroed in on his second-straight world title. The Texas native clinched another gold buckle with an 8.3-second run on the final night. His execution was flawless. “Coming in, I knew I was going to have to play offense the whole time,”
Webb said. “I needed to win a couple of rounds. And I knew (Dec. 14) if I wanted a chance at the gold buckle, I was going to have to win the average.” The 21-year-old finished the year in record-breaking fashion with $475,215 in season earnings. The previous single-season tie-down roping earnings mark was set by Webb last season at $452,852. And while Webb took a different route to his world title this season, he appreciates the competitive environment that fuels his passion. “These are the top guys in the world, and we push each other to be the best we can be every day and all year long,” Webb said. “(Shad) was in the lead the whole time, and I fell a bit behind. But I kept pushing and grinding by coming out here, doing my job and roping the best I could every day. And it worked out for me in the end.”
Webb goes back-to-back as PRCA World Champion
BY DAGIN RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News I n Las Vegas, a cowboy finds himself in one of two spots: the predator or the prey. Regular season leaders enter the Thomas & Mack Center clinging to their lead while others take aim. Last year, tie-down roper Riley Webb entered the Wrangler NFR atop
the leaderboard in search of his first world title. The cowboy fended off the field with a string of consistent performances, holding a firm grasp on his first place position. This year, Webb turned predator, storming into Sin City fourth in the PRCA RAM | World Standings. The 2023 PRCA Tie-Down Roping Champion sought to defend his title, trailing leader Shad Mayfield by $69,440.
