Chance Schott wins Xtreme Bulls and rodeo in Rapid City Double Dip BY DAGIN RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News C hance Schott’s trip home to South Dakota mirrored the plot of a Hollywood film. The bull rider marveled at Rodeo Rapid City as a kid, dreaming about the day he would capture a win insideThe Monument Arena. Instead, he left with two. Schott’s run began on the final Friday in January, competing in the Rodeo Rapid City PRCA Xtreme Bulls. The cowboy topped the leaderboard with an 86.5-point ride on New Frontier Rodeo’s No. F24, claiming the $4,089 first-place check. It was a pinch-me moment for Schott. “Bull riding, there’s just no feeling like it,” Schott said. “You get that adrenaline rush after conquering an animal that’s ten times your weight, there’s no better feeling out there.” A week later Schott returned for Rodeo Rapid City, aiming to eclipse his last performance. This matchup proved unique. His father Dallas recently signed on with Sutton Rodeo to provide bulls. By coincidence, one of his bulls landed next to his son’s name. Despite having a longstanding connection to the stock, the 24-year-old had never ridden the bull. No problem. The cowboy claimed his second-straight win, riding One Chance to an 87.5-point trip. For Schott, this ride meant more. “It was pretty special. I drew a great bull from Sutton Rodeo,” said Schott, who won $4,399. “Honestly, I kind of got to watch this bull grow up and earn its way through the PRCA. So that was pretty cool to get on him in front of my home state and family and friends. It truly was a special ride to me.” The pair of wins capped off a storybook ending. The South Dakota native grew up in McLaughlin, roughly four hours from Rapid City. He frequently attended rodeos at The Monument, relishing a chance to step inside the chutes. Now, he owns memories he will never forget. “It was amazing. There’s a lot of cool arenas we get to go to out here but just being in my home state is special. Whenever I go back, I can’t walk 15 feet without running into someone I know,” Schott chuckled. “To go in this year and win both the Xtreme Bulls and Rodeo Rapid City, I couldn’t have asked for a better week there.” Schott has started red-hot this winter. Since the new year, the bull rider has earned money at every stop including paydays in Fort Worth and Denver. He attributed the success to a decision to invest in himself. The cowboy signed on with Doug Champion of Champion Living Fitness, prioritizing his custom workout program. He’s reaped the benefits, admitting he’s felt more mentally and physically prepared for this season than in the past. As Schott enters his third full season, he’s poised to make a run at the NFR. He believes this year could be the year. It would only add another fascinating page to his Hollywood script. “It would mean the world to me. I’ve taken a different approach this year and I’m going to take care of my body, aiming to stay healthy the whole year,” said Schott. “I think by doing so, it will be key to my success. I feel like this is my year. I’ve learned a lot through the past few years, and I feel like I’ve got it all together to have a great, successful season to get me in the yellow chutes.”
