BY MATT NABER T exas steer wrestler Sam Powers has a ProRodeo powerhouse in his corner with family and friends branching into nearly every aspect of the sport. Since 2013, the Sonora cowboy has cut his teeth in the exas Circuit. The 25-year-old is on the cusp of expanding his ProRodeo horizons beyond the Lone Star State. “Except for the past year, the circuit system allowing you
to go to the national circuit (finals) and that all counting for the world standings, that was hard to turn down,” Powers said, explaining what he likes about the circuit system. “The second point to that was learning to get better to win so that I could eventually go out and compete with the big guys outside of Texas.” This fourth-generation cowboy is the grandson of Jimmy Powers, whose ProRodeo résumé is highlighted with serving on the PRCA Board of Directors for 20 years and owning two horses that won the steer wrestling horse of the year award: Too Vee “Yellow Dog” (1994) and Bad Motor Scooter “Scooter”
