SILVER SPURS RODEO

said traveling partner Bill Tutor. “It’s always great to see your traveling partners do well,” Tutor said. “You pull for them like you’re pulling for yourself. “…He’s so cool and nonchalant you don’t see dry streaks or slumps affect himmuch.” MEANINGFUL CHRISTMAS The French-born cowboy who makes his residence in Huntsville, Texas, failed to make the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December, finishing 17th in the PRCAWorld Standings and snapping a streak of back-to-back qualifications in 2015-16. Missing out on a trip to Las Vegas was disappointing, yes, but it wasn’t the worst thing. It kept Jayne at home for a special Christmas season. His daughter, Sienna, suffered a brain aneurism in February 2017. She was put in a medically induced coma for more than two weeks. She underwent brain surgery (her hair is growing out after having to shave her head). But she’s doing much better, Jayne said. “I was pretty bummed,” Jayne said about missing the WNFR. “But looking at other things in my life, I was able to have my daughter with me, that was the most important thing for me, that at the end of the year I was going to spend Christmas with my daughter. It sucks not to be at the Finals, especially when I really wanted to make the Finals with him (Tutor) because it was his first Finals. And I wanted to be there for him and with him. If you take a step back and look at the bigger picture, having my daughter and having my family with me is the biggest present I could have asked for.” RIDINGTHROUGHTHEANDES (BIKINGTHROUGH SANTIAGO) Being fromMarseille, France, if Jayne and the family travel out of the United States it’s usually across the Pond to visit family in France. But earlier this month, Jayne was given the chance to travel to South America for a commercial. He was told he’d have to decide quickly. How quickly? One day. Sure enough, he found himself touching down in Santiago, Chile. Then he was riding a horse in the Andes Mountains. “It was pretty unreal,” he said. “I had to pinch myself several times when I was settling on the back of the horse looking at the Andes, thinking, ‘Wow, I would never have thought that.’” While Chile ranks among the most diverse places rodeo has indirectly taken him, Jayne is always sure to note where his travels take him. “That happens on a weekly basis,” he laughed. “I have to tell myself even when we’re in Florida, I still can’t believe I’m in Florida. And last week I was in Chile, next week I’ll be in Arizona. This is really cool. You’re always seeing new things, traveling. I try to take it all in, really store it all in my head.” During the six-day stint in Santiago, Jayne had one day off. Not one to sit in his hotel room, Jayne planned on renting a bicycle and cruising around Santiago. And bike he did, but he didn’t need to rent one. The concierge at the hotel had ridden his bicycle to work. He told Jayne to borrow the bike, just have it back by the time his shift ended.

“I rode like 20 miles and saw the whole city with his bike,” Jayne said. “It was insane. The town is really, really clean. “They have parks everywhere, so you’re literally jumping park to park all day long, it’s a real green city.” Jayne is hoping he’s found his groove as the winter turns to spring and the summer rodeos beckon. As of Feb. 20, he was in sixth place in the world standings with $19,025. His fortunes may be heading upward after a slow start. “I should know better, I’ve done this bareback thing for a while,” Jayne said. “I know it’s a roller coaster, and I was down for a while. Now I’m up.”
