IN HIS WORDS TREG SCHAACK Tie-down roper makes most of San Antonio qualifier I t was great to have that qualifier. I think that committee did a good job and the stock contractors did good, too. All of us were really thankful
It was just a bad year. I got a new horse a few months ago, called Quigley. He’s 11. He’s not exceptional at anything. He does everything pretty good, doesn’t get in my way and lets me win. I get along with him pretty well, he fits me pretty good. I bought him fromCody Little from San My dad used to rope calves and rodeo. lt’s something I grew up watching. I just always liked it. When I was a kid he was still roping quite a bit. I got to go with him. It was good. I’ve been around rodeo since I was really young. It’s all I’ve known. I think I speak for everyone when I say it’s a bummer these rodeos are canceling. Nobody wants to see them cancel, nobody likes to see it. When they’re having rodeos, it’s good, everybody is excited to go. (Rodeo) Rapid City was pretty good, the weather was good. Any time a rodeo adds that much and gets that many guys, you have to be there. That’s the plan, to rodeo hard this season. We’re going to go to the best rodeos and hopefully they have the best rodeos like they used to. We’ll get to all of them we can. Saba, Texas. It took a little time for us to figure some stuff out, but the further we go, the better we get.
After a season that went awry due to COVID-19 and horse issues, tie-down roper Treg Schaack is looking to bounce back and get in the hunt for a spot at the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Schaack earned more than $60,000 over his first two seasons but made less than $1,000 in 2020. He’s already bested that mark early in 2021. Schaack earned $1,820 after tying for first in the first round and finishing second in the finals in Fort Worth at the Stockyards Shootout, a qualifier for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The 26-year-old fromWeatherford, Texas, is headed to the prestigious San Antonio rodeo for the first time in his young career.
they put something on to have that opportunity. Everyone did a good job putting it on.
It’s really good because last year they had a San Antonio qualifier, but it wasn’t as good as this year’s because this year had fewer guys. The odds of getting into San Antonio were a lot better. Last year, the San Antonio qualifier had 100- some guys, so it was hard to get through there and get in. I think everyone liked that the PRCA did that this year. With so many rodeos being canceled and no certainty of what rodeos will be going on this summer, it’s nice to go to San Antonio. It’s always been a good rodeo, a good way to win some money and have a good start for the year. I’mmainly looking forward to the fact that there’s good added money and fewer guys in San Antonio (than at most rodeos). Everyone there ropes well. It’s not easy, but the odds are better. I had some horse troubles last year, and with COVID I didn’t go to as many rodeos.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK
How did you get your start in rodeo? Kash: My family is a rodeo family. My dad (Sean) raised bucking horses and my older brother (Kaden) rode broncs, so I guess I just followed in their footsteps. I’ve been around rodeo my whole life. I also have two older sisters, Kella and Kesse, and my mom, Kellie. Everybody in my family has been supportive of my rodeo career. Why did you choose saddle bronc riding as your main event? Kash: I saw my brother doing it and we are in South Dakota, so you either ride saddle broncs or you get to watch everybody ride saddle broncs. I did Little Britches, 4-H rodeos, high school rodeos and then I went on to college at Sheridan (Wyo.) College. I got an associate degree in ag science. Did you have any rodeo idols growing up? Kash: Yes. Jesse Bail (12-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier, six times each in saddle bronc riding and bull riding). I’ve always been a huge fan of Jesse’s, and he’s still riding. I grew up knowing him, and he’s been a big help to me. How has the progression of your PRCA career gone? Saddle bronc rider Kash Deal, 25, is coming off the biggest win of his PRCA career. He took the title at the Stockyards Shootout at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 24. The Shootout was a qualifying event for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, which begins Feb. 12. The Dupree, S.D., cowboy is hoping that victory will catapult him to a career year. Deal got his PRCA card in January 2017. His best season was 2018, earning $15,141.
KASH DEAL
Kash: When I bought my PRCA card in 2017 that was the first year I made the (RAM) Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo. I also made it there in 2018. I didn’t venture out real far. I stayed in my circuit. In 2019, I ventured out and it went well (he earned $10,485). Last year, things didn’t go as well as I would have liked. I had some saddle troubles, and we got to rodeo up here, but we had the best of the best at our rodeos (because of the COVID-19 pandemic). What was it like to win the third round and the finals at the Stockyards Shootout? Kash: I drew nice horses all the way through there. It was a cool experience. Now I’ll get to compete in San Antonio for the first time and I plan on winning some money down there. Hopefully it will work out well, I’ll have a good winter and set up my summer. You have a catchy first and last name. Is there any significance to that? Kash: I think that’s just what my parents wanted to name me. I guess I’ve never heard any story about it. I like the name a lot. When you’re not rodeoing what are you doing?
Kash: My wife (Shayna) and I have 60 head of cows and we ranch. We’re just feeding them for the winter right now, and then we’ll start calving at the end of March. I also will shoe some horses and work the sale barn in Faith (S.D.). My wife is a breakaway roper, so we travel to the closer rodeos together. We’re also expecting our first child in July. What are your main rodeo goals for 2021? Kash: I would love to qualify for the (Wrangler NFR), and I know I dang sure want to qualify for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. What’s your favorite thing your wife cooks? Kash: She makes a lot of good stuff. I think what I like best are the steak kebabs.
What’s your favorite restaurant? Kash: I would have to say Buffalo Wild Wings. I get the spicy wings. What’s your favorite candy? Kash: I like Hot Tamales. What’s your favorite non-alcoholic beverage to drink? Kash: Coffee. What’s your favorite holiday? Kash: Christmas. I enjoy being around family and getting to see everybody. What’s your favorite TV show? Kash: The Office . I like that show because there’s always humor in it, and I like Michael Scott. What’s your go-to movie? Kash: I would have to say Land of the Lost with Will Ferrell. That movie makes me laugh. Did you have a favorite Halloween costume growing up? Kash : Yes, when I was Zorro or a bullfighter. I dressed up in those costumes plenty of times.

TIME CAPSULE PREDICTING NFR 1984
PRCA ProRodeo photo illustration
Future Seer? In 1984, psychic Charol Messenger offered predictions to ProRodeo Sports News on who would win world championships that season. 1984 WORLD CHAMPIONS AA: Dee Pickett (HOF Inductee, 2003) BB: Larry Peabody (HOF Inductee, 2019) SW: John W. Jones Jr. (HOF Inductee, 1996) TR: (Tie) Dee Pickett and Mike Beers (HOF Inductee, 2017) SB: Brad Gjermundson (HOF Inductee, 1995) Psychic made ProRodeo predictions in 1984
TD: Roy Cooper (HOF Inductee, 1979) SR: Guy Allen (HOF Inductee, 1996) GB: Charmayne James (HOF Inductee, 2017) BR: Don Gay (HOF Inductee, 1979)
BY MATT NABER I n August 1984, ProRodeo Sports News assigned 1983’s outstanding contributor Doyle Trent to visit a psychic. Trent would read the psychic a list of names of ProRodeo athletes likely to qualify for the 1984 National Finals Rodeo and the psychic would predict their outcomes. After the Finals, her predictions were published in the Dec. 26, 1984, edition. Charol Messenger, a psychic, was enrolled at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Thirty-seven years later, Messenger is still active in her field of work. Neither the PSN staff nor the psychic predicted that each world champion that year would go on to become a ProRodeo Hall of Fame Inductee, though two of them had been induced in 1979. The following are some highlights from her predictions, with the world champions listed in the information box above: • All-Around cowboy Dee Pickett – “My feeling is he has the best chance, the energies are more in his favor. He’s more together. He’s more integrated, and he’s just under more favorable conditions during this period.” • All-Around cowboy Lewis Feild – “Something goes wrong; there’s a change of order, a change of direction …” • Bareback rider Danny Brady – “Favorable. Not as good as should be. He’s not prepared, but he could get himself into better condition if he wished.”
• Bareback rider Lewis Feild – “He has a good chance.” • Steer wrestler Lance Robinson – “Very, very good. This guy is a 10. He has a great amount of potential and if he were groomed properly for the skill level he’s going for there’s no reason why he couldn’t be a winner.” • Team roperMike Beers – “Some kind of entanglement gets in the way.” • Team roper Dee Pickett – “Slow on the gate. Slow coming in.” • Saddle bronc rider Kent Cooper – “Something’s going to distract him. He has a lot of potential, but he’s scattered.” • Tie-down roper Roy Cooper – “Now this guy’s a winner. He has more potential than all of them put together. I don’t give him a 10 but I give him an eight-and-a-half.” • Steer roper Guy Allen – “Moved to the competition.” • Barrel racer Charmayne James – “Not this time. Keep an eye on her.” • Barrel racer Brenda Tyler – “Too much on her mind.” • Bull rider Don Gay – “Not in the running.” • Bull rider Lane Frost – “Almost a tie-breaker between him and Ted Nuce. Very close. I would say Nuce has possibly the better chance of the two.” he full story and list of predictions can be found in the De c. 26, 1984, edition of ProRodeo Sports News that’s available in digital format on ProRodeo.com.

SHORT ROUND Mitch, Tyson Durfey’s horse, passes away in January Last Hurrah
M itch, the primary horse the last two seasons for 2016 PRCA World Champion Tie-down Roper Tyson Durfey, passed away Jan. 27. Mitch was 17. “He had a heart aneurysm, a valve burst in his heart and he passed away immediately,” Durfey said. Durfey first rode Money Mitch, as he was known, at the 2018 National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Durfey got aboard Mitch at the 2018 NFR after his star horse Nikko passed away unexpectedly Nov. 23 that year. Nikko was 14. Mitch was buried next to Nikko on Durfey’s ranch in Brock, Texas. “Mitch was a very loyal horse,” Durfey said. “He was a lot different than Nikko in the aspect that he didn’t care to play around. He wasn’t the playful type. He was always down to business. He loved to go to the roping pen and rope and chase calves. He was known for pinning his ears back and trying to bite cows on the butt.” At the 2018 Finals, one of Mitch’s first rodeos, he powered Durfey to place in three rounds, including winning Round 7 with a 7.2-second time. Durfey, a 14-time NFR qualifier (2007-11, 2013- 20) finished fourth in the 2018 PRCA | RAM World Standings. Durfey, aboard Mitch at the 2019 NFR, placed in seven rounds and finished second in the average. Durfey finished third in the world standings with $237,532. “Mitch was just a really consistent, solid horse that gave me

the shot to rope at the NFR and have a chance to win the world title,” Durfey said. “I’m thankful that he filled the gap for so many years.” Durfey also rode Mitch for Round 1 and Round 2 at the 2020 Wrangler NFR at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Durfey said his main option to ride now is Blue Duck, 11.

Above all, the health and safety of the community is the rodeo’s top priority, and after much consultation with local and state officials and medical experts, rodeo officials concluded that canceling the 2021 event was necessary. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo promotes agriculture by hosting an annual, family-friendly experience that educates and entertains the public, supports Texas youth, showcases Western heritage and provides year-round educational support within the community. Since its beginning in 1932, the rodeo has committed more than $500 million to the youth of Texas and education. For more information, visit rodeohouston.com.

The Junior Market Auctions and Champion Wine Auction will still be held in May, also as private events. These events will follow all state and local health and safety guidelines.
