COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK
How did you get your start in rodeo? Kash: My family is a rodeo family. My dad (Sean) raised bucking horses and my older brother (Kaden) rode broncs, so I guess I just followed in their footsteps. I’ve been around rodeo my whole life. I also have two older sisters, Kella and Kesse, and my mom, Kellie. Everybody in my family has been supportive of my rodeo career. Why did you choose saddle bronc riding as your main event? Kash: I saw my brother doing it and we are in South Dakota, so you either ride saddle broncs or you get to watch everybody ride saddle broncs. I did Little Britches, 4-H rodeos, high school rodeos and then I went on to college at Sheridan (Wyo.) College. I got an associate degree in ag science. Did you have any rodeo idols growing up? Kash: Yes. Jesse Bail (12-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier, six times each in saddle bronc riding and bull riding). I’ve always been a huge fan of Jesse’s, and he’s still riding. I grew up knowing him, and he’s been a big help to me. How has the progression of your PRCA career gone? Saddle bronc rider Kash Deal, 25, is coming off the biggest win of his PRCA career. He took the title at the Stockyards Shootout at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 24. The Shootout was a qualifying event for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, which begins Feb. 12. The Dupree, S.D., cowboy is hoping that victory will catapult him to a career year. Deal got his PRCA card in January 2017. His best season was 2018, earning $15,141.

Kash: When I bought my PRCA card in 2017 that was the first year I made the (RAM) Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo. I also made it there in 2018. I didn’t venture out real far. I stayed in my circuit. In 2019, I ventured out and it went well (he earned $10,485). Last year, things didn’t go as well as I would have liked. I had some saddle troubles, and we got to rodeo up here, but we had the best of the best at our rodeos (because of the COVID-19 pandemic). What was it like to win the third round and the finals at the Stockyards Shootout? Kash: I drew nice horses all the way through there. It was a cool experience. Now I’ll get to compete in San Antonio for the first time and I plan on winning some money down there. Hopefully it will work out well, I’ll have a good winter and set up my summer. You have a catchy first and last name. Is there any significance to that? Kash: I think that’s just what my parents wanted to name me. I guess I’ve never heard any story about it. I like the name a lot. When you’re not rodeoing what are you doing?
Kash: My wife (Shayna) and I have 60 head of cows and we ranch. We’re just feeding them for the winter right now, and then we’ll start calving at the end of March. I also will shoe some horses and work the sale barn in Faith (S.D.). My wife is a breakaway roper, so we travel to the closer rodeos together. We’re also expecting our first child in July. What are your main rodeo goals for 2021? Kash: I would love to qualify for the (Wrangler NFR), and I know I dang sure want to qualify for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. What’s your favorite thing your wife cooks? Kash: She makes a lot of good stuff. I think what I like best are the steak kebabs.
What’s your favorite restaurant? Kash: I would have to say Buffalo Wild Wings. I get the spicy wings. What’s your favorite candy? Kash: I like Hot Tamales. What’s your favorite non-alcoholic beverage to drink? Kash: Coffee. What’s your favorite holiday? Kash: Christmas. I enjoy being around family and getting to see everybody. What’s your favorite TV show? Kash: The Office . I like that show because there’s always humor in it, and I like Michael Scott. What’s your go-to movie? Kash: I would have to say Land of the Lost with Will Ferrell. That movie makes me laugh. Did you have a favorite Halloween costume growing up? Kash : Yes, when I was Zorro or a bullfighter. I dressed up in those costumes plenty of times.
