BY NICK CICERE A s the old saying goes, home is where the heart is. In the case of saddle bronc rider Ty Manke, home is South Dakota, and the love affair has been ongoing for more than 30 years. Manke, who grew up just outside of Rapid City, S.D, had a caravan of close family and friends in the stands when he entered the Barnett Arena on Feb. 3. As the last saddle bronc rider out during the final performance at Rodeo Rapid City, the 31-year-old tried not to make the spotlight bigger than it was. Manke carries momentum into 2018, winning hometown rodeo

“I knew I had a good horse,” Manke said. “That South Point of the Suttons, I’d been on him a couple of times before. I knew I had the horsepower, but on the other hand, I knew that if I stubbed my toe he’d buck me off, so I was a little nervous. Being in front of a hometown crowd made me a little more nervous.” Despite the spike of adrenaline, Manke managed to outlast the highly acclaimed bucking horse, riding for 86 points in his one and only go. Having attended Rodeo Rapid City throughout his life, both as a fan and as a competitor, the win was a longtime coming. “I grew up just 15 miles south of (Rapid City) in Hermosa,” Manke said, “so it’s kind of my hometown rodeo. I’ve always dreamed of it, so it was cool for it to come true.” Manke’s previous venture with South Point took place in 2016 at the Crystal Springs Rodeo (South Lake, S.D.), where he rode the horse to the whistle for 84 points. Despite the horse’s intimidating reputation, the South Dakota cowboy leveraged his experience to put together the winning ride.
