RODEO RAPID CITY

“I knew I had to get stuff rolling right away because he sure bucks right out of there,” he said. “Then, after that, he’s just a lot of fun for a bronc rider. After those first couple of jumps, it felt really good and I started to have some fun.” Among the Manke faithful in the stands at Rodeo Rapid City were his wife, Trista, his parents, his in-laws and his niece, who was especially excited to see her uncle win $4,681. “She’s 12 years old and she was videoing me on her phone,” Manke said. “You couldn’t really see much because it was more shaking and jumping around, but all you could hear was, “Go Uncle Ty! Go Uncle Ty!” After I got off, she was just screaming, so for her it was a lot of excitement. “My wife, Trista, was real excited. When she saw 86 (points) come up, she was quite excited, as well.” Trista holds her own rodeo pedigree. Not only does she rodeo, but her father, Wade Berry, is a PRCA judge and former National Finals Rodeo steer wrestling qualifier. Her uncle, Ote Berry, was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1998 after winning four steer wrestling world titles. She knows a thing or two about a winning background, and she was elated to see her husband fulfill a lifelong goal. “It was awesome,” Trista said. “My family is pretty low-key because we’ve always been around rodeo, so none of us ever jump up in the stands, but there was some jumping up in the stands that night.” Winning Rodeo Rapid City is a perfect reflection of the formManke finds himself in. In terms of money won, 2017 was his most fruitful season on the rodeo trail, as he won more than $26,000 and finished

aggressively as possible, but she encourages it. “Since we started dating, I’ve always known that’s his goal,” she said. “I think that we all focus on that, and I’m just hoping to help him pursue that. It’s a big deal for us, my family and everybody, that we stand behind him. We do whatever we can to support him and let him know that he can go out there and try, and we’ll handle things back home.” Naturally, the Wrangler NFR is where every cowboy aspires to someday be, and Manke is no different. “I think it’s every cowboy’s dream to make the NFR,” Manke said. “That’s one of my highest goals.” Given the talent Manke possesses and the foundation he has built back home in South Dakota, the 2018 season looks to be yet another chapter in a story in which thrill accelerates after the passing of each page. “(The NFR) is our goal,” Trista said. “That would be our biggest goal together.”

39th in the saddle bronc riding world standings. He nabbed victories at the RAMBadlands Circuit Finals Rodeo (Minot, S.D.), the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo (Baker, Mont.) and was co-champion with Taos Muncy at Rodeo Corpus Christi (Texas). For Manke, it simply boils down to competing at more rodeos. “Years before, I’d kind of venture out to some rodeos outside of the circuit,” he said. “But I just stay close to home. Last year, I ventured out a little bit more, and this year, I’m planning on entering everything. Hopefully that goes good for me and I can keep winning.” When Manke isn’t rodeoing, he works as his own boss, owning a fencing company. Trista is a traveling nurse who tries to accommodate her husband’s rodeo schedule by finding contracts at hospitals in areas Ty is set to appear. Luckily for Ty, Trista not only hopes to see him pursue the rodeo schedule as
