James Owen Aplan, a former PRCA rodeo clown from Piedmont, S.D., passed away Dec. 26. He was 87. In addition to

being inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 1998, Aplan’s accolades include: being named to the board of directors of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City,

legendary PRCA stock contractor who was inducted into the ProRodeoHall of Fame in 1990. Honeycutt had a brother, Art, and sister, Betty. In 1963, Honeycutt met a rodeo cowboy, best friend and soon-to-be husband, Roy Honeycutt. They were married 55 years. Roy and Virginia ran the Honeycutt Rodeo Company for more than 40 years. She and Roy traveled across the country and the world producing rodeos. Virginia was a part of every aspect of rodeo. She was a flag girl, barrel racer, rodeo timer, secretary and stock contractor’s wife. She lived rodeo, and she loved rodeo. Honeycutt is survived by husband, Roy; children Jerry, Scott and Janet; grandchildren Tel, Orrin, Dawson and Riley; and great-grandchild, Waycee. Roy asked that any donations be made to College Heights Baptist Church in Alamosa, where the couple worshiped for nearly 50 years.

Pierre. Aplan retired from banking in 1986 to devote time to his hobby of collecting and merchandising. Aplan and his wife, Peggy, donated time, money and material to several museums and historical organizations and have received awards for historical displays of their collections, loans and gifts. These may be seen at museums such as the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Gene Autry Museum and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Aplan is survived by his wife, Peggy; sister, Carla Sahr; brother, Frank Aplan; son, Arthur, his wife, Anja, their daughter, Irene; daughter, Rose, her husband, Bob Diez, their son, Robert, and daughter, Georgia; daughter, Kathy Aplan, her son, Alexander; daughter, Karen Darling, her son, Zachary, and daughter, Carly; daughter, Karla Aplan; son, Morgan, his wife, Elysia; daughter, Travis, her children, Joshua and Paige; son, Brent Barker, his sons Ashton and Logan.
