IN HIS WORDS LANE MITCHELL Heeler off to a quick start in world standings T his year, I’m roping with Jake Cooper and we’ve had a good start to the season. We’ll go pretty hard, we’ll go to all the winter rodeos and pretty much to as many rodeos as we can, 65 of them. Last year, his partner was wanting to go home and so was mine. We ( Jake and I) said we’d finish the year together

I ride an 8-year-old roan I call Mayberry and a 10-year-old sorrel named Boomer. Lately I’ve been riding the roan more. He’s really fast and good in the box. I compete in the Texas Circuit because I already spend the winters in Texas. I’m already out here going to Odessa and San Angelo, rodeos like that. So, it’s two birds with The RAMTexas Circuit Finals went well. Kaleb and I placed in all three rounds and won the average. We earned about $4,300 and get to go to Kissimmee. That’s good, especially in a year like this, when there aren’t many chances for big money during the winter. To have a chance to go to the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee for that amount of money is pretty good. It counts for the world standings too, so that’s also a huge bonus. In the fall, Jake and I went 4.3 (seconds at the Heart O’ Texas Rodeo) and tied for fourth there. We won about $3,000 to get us on the board. It’s good, because in years like this it’s important to have a good winter and always important to start off well. It takes the pressure off a little bit, but not really, if that makes sense. You still have to win every weekend, week in and week out. one stone, a lot easier, a lot less traveling.

Lane Mitchell is searching for his first qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The 26-year- old team roping heeler from Bolivar, Tenn., is fourth in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $7,184. He teamed with Jake Cooper to tie for fourth at the Heart O’ Texas Rodeo in October and with Kaleb Driggers to win the RAM Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo in January, earning Mitchell his first trip to the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., in the spring. Mitchell, who lives in Stephenville, Texas, in the winter, started roping with Cooper midway through last season. Their success, which saw Mitchell finish 26th in the 2020 world standings, have the two paired up for 2021.

and see how it went. We ended up doing pretty good the rest of the season, so figured we’d keep going this year. As soon as we started roping, we started winning. It’s been pretty dang good roping with Jake, it’s been working so far. Rodeo isn’t quite as popular in Tennessee as it is in Texas. They’ll have rodeos every weekend around there, but they are small. It’s not to the scale of Texas. My dad ( Jim) ropes, and we had an indoor arena close to my house. We went to junior rodeos. My dad heads and so do my older brother (Clay) and younger brother (Ross). I don’t know why I started heeling. It’s just what I wanted to do. I went to the University of Tennessee-Martin, earning an ag business degree. While I was there, I heeled, tie-down roped and steer wrestled. I made the College National Finals Rodeo in team roping three times.

Steer wrestler Will Lummus won the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, Jan. 16. Hot Start

“There’s a lot of money to be won in the summer, and you can normally have a good summer and make it to the Finals. But as uncertain as it is now, it’s very important to get an early start because you never know how many rodeos you’ll get to go to, so that makes every steer really important.” – WILL LUMMUS

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

Bareback rider Kyle Bloomquist is ready to take the next step in his ProRodeo career. Bloomquist, 22, bought his PRCA card in January. He’s competing in the Great Lakes Circuit and has high hopes of winning rookie of the year in 2021. In February 2020, Bloomquist had his career-best win to date, capturing the title at Rodeo Rapid City (S.D.) with an 88-point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Fire Fly to earn $4,547.

How did you get your start in rodeo? Kyle: I grew up in Raymond, Minn. My dad (David) got me into rodeo because he high school rodeoed and did some rodeoing in the PRCA. My dad was a bareback rider and bull rider, and was a bullfighter. My dad gave me the opportunity to rodeo, and when my older sister (Rachel) started junior high rodeoing I was able to watch everything, and it was something I wanted to do. When you were younger was there a cowboy you looked up to? Kyle: I started watching Tanner Aus (five-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier from Granite Falls, Minn.). I was watching Tanner when I was in high school, and he has helped me a lot and he’s still helping out to this day. I struck up a friendship with him. His dad and my dad used to rodeo together back in the day. Did you rodeo in college? Kyle: I rodeoed at Sheridan (Wyo.) College and got an associate degree in ag business and a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary

KYLE BLOOMQUIST

Studies from Chadron (Neb.) State College in December. I rodeoed for Chadron for two years. I qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo three times, once at Sheridan and twice at Chadron. That was awesome to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo. That was a good stepping-stone for me. What was it like when you got that win at Rodeo Rapid City last year? Kyle: I was speechless afterward. I honestly couldn’t believe I just won Rodeo Rapid City. I had always enjoyed going to that rodeo when I was in high school. Then, to go out there and win it, it made me believe that I’m capable of running with these top guys and I have the talent and the drive to do something with my career. Is there a rodeo you want to go to that you haven’t been to yet? Kyle: I would really like to go to Pendleton (Ore). I’ve never gotten to rodeo on the grass there and I really want to.

What does 8 seconds feel like to you? Kyle: I think it is a blast. There are times when you don’t want it to end and sometimes it can’t come soon enough. I just enjoy it as much as I can. What are your rodeo goals for 2021? Kyle: I would love to win rookie of the year and I’m excited to finally get to travel all over the country and get to go to some of these bigger rodeos. Just the experience alone should be great. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing? Kyle: I enjoy working out or riding my horse. I also like to go deer hunting and ice fishing. What TV show do you binge watch? Kyle: The Office . That show is really funny, and I enjoy when Jim messes with Dwight all the time. What’s your favorite movie? Kyle: Step Brothers . That movie makes me laugh.

If you could pick one restaurant to go to, what would it be? Kyle: When out there rodeoing, I like to go to In-N-Out Burger. What’s the best thing you cook? Kyle: Ribeye steak. Do you have a favorite candy or sweet? Kyle: I love those big, monster cookies with M&M’s in them that they sell at grocery stores. Do you have a favorite sports team? Kyle: Minnesota Golden Gophers. I like their hockey team the best. What’s your favorite holiday? Kyle: I would have to say Christmas. I enjoy being around family and spending time with people I don’t get to see all the time. Did you have a favorite Halloween costume you wore? Kyle: I put on all my dad’s bullfighting stuff and put all his makeup on when I was younger, and I dressed up like that again for Halloween this year.

SHORT ROUND Vold Rodeo Company’s Painted Valley passes away Greener pastures

P ainted Valley, a multi-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo bareback and saddle bronc horse, passed away Jan. 14, according to Kirsten Vold, owner of Vold Rodeo Company. Painted Valley was 19 and a ranch-raised stud. Painted Valley was the 2010 PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year and the top saddle bronc horse of the 2009 National Finals Rodeo. On the maternal side, Painted Valley was a son of Harry Vold’s six-time NFR mare Big Valley. The horse was a product of decades spent selectively breeding bucking horses on the Vold Ranch in Avondale, Colo. Big Valley is a daughter of the producing-Vold mare Yellow Valley and Vold stud named Kojak, all ranch-raised. In 2007, Painted Valley was selected

to his first NFR as a bareback horse. The following year, he debuted in Las Vegas as a saddle bronc horse. Selected to his third NFR in 2009, Painted Valley had a breakout year, from carrying ProRodeo Hall of Famer Billy Etbauer to an 89-point ride in Cheyenne, Wyo., to earning best bronc at San Antonio. He was also selected best saddle bronc at the Mountain

States Circuit that year and third runner-up in the Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year voting to go with the NFR saddle bronc of the year honor. Painted Valley retired from bucking in March 2014.

Bull rider Daylon Swearingen, who qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in 2019, is out the rest of the winter and much of the spring with multiple injuries. Bareback rider Leighton Berry, who made his Wrangler NFR debut in 2020, is likely out even longer with a back injury. Swearingen suffered a right shoulder injury at a non-PRCA sanctioned event in the fall. Dr. Tandy Freeman operated on the shoulder Nov. 25. Swearingen will have hip surgery in February. Swearingen is aiming to return to competition in May or June. Berry was injured at the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, Jan. 8. “I got smashed in the bucking chutes and suffered some torn ligaments between my two vertebrae, my T12 and L1 to be Swearingen, Berry out indefinitely

exact,” said Berry, 21. “Those are compressed, so they are going to

go in there and put two screws in those vertebrae, anchor them down and put a bone graft where the ligament is torn and then a rod to fuse them together.” Berry is having surgery in Austin, Texas, Jan. 27. “I’m expecting to be out between six and eight months,” Berry said. “It just depends on how my recovery comes along.” Berry Swearingen

Garcilazo, who won the award in 2007, 2013, 2018 and 2019 and is a mainstay at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, is competing on the “Go-Big Show” on TBS. Garcilazo defeated athlete Aaron Fotheringham on Jan. 14 to move on to the semifinals at a yet-to-be-determined date on TBS. Garcilazo is not the only PRCA athlete competing on the “Go-Big Show.” The specialty act of Rider Kiesner and Bethany Iles is also on, doing trick riding, trick roping, gun spinning and whip cracking. Fellow PRCA trick rider Ginger Duke and bullfighter Justin Josey are also on. Duke competed Jan. 21. When Kiesner-Iles and Josey will appear on TV is unknown. The “Go-Big Show” airs at 9 p.m. (ET) on Thursdays on TBS. The “Go-Big Show” is an extreme talent show with contestants ranging from horse trick riders to giant ramp jumpers to people performing incredible feats of strength to alligator and rattlesnake wrestlers, stunt archers and world record- holders. The series is a celebration of daring acts, as contestants battle head-to-head to win the finale’s ultimate $100,000 prize.
