2020 increases health awareness in ProRodeo Wise Healthy Wealthy AND

BY MATT NABER O ver the 2020 ProRodeo season, one that was heavily impacted by COVID-19, ProRodeo athletes were more health conscious. Aiding that awareness, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, offered a fitness center and other changes. In the thick of it all was the Justin Sportsmedicine team. The 2020 season had about half as many competitions as normal, but the Justin Sportsmedicine team saw about two-thirds as many injured athletes as a typical year. “We had half as many rodeos, but it didn’t feel like it from as hard as we worked,” said Rick Foster, program director for Justin Sportsmedicine. “As far as keeping athletes performing, it was a very successful year.” COVID-19’s cancellation of all ProRodeo events for two months in the spring of 2020 created downtime in a sport that has no “offseason.” “Other sports have offseasons since it allows guys to heal up, get surgeries and rest mentally and physically,” Foster said. “Guys were overall less physically and mentally stressed, and they recovered quickly and stayed healthy.” Heightened awareness of health in 2020 generated an influx of ProRodeo athletes visiting the Justin Sportsmedicine team throughout the season.
