BY MATT NABER A lthough the 2021 season officially began Oct. 1, 2020, the conclusion of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo followed by the start of the new calendar year often is when the new season hits home for ProRodeo athletes. The tradition of making a New Year’s resolution as a ProRodeo athlete holds true no matter how the previous season ended. Whether it’s to win a certain rodeo, to improve as a competitor or something else entirely, some of the top PRCA cowboys of 2020 shared what their goals are for the 2021 year and season. 2021 Dreams Bareback rider Tim O’Connell has his eyes on RodeoHouston and the Calgary Stampede with the ultimate goal of winning a fourth world title. Cowboys set goals for the coming year
TIM O’CONNELL Event: Bareback riding Age: 30 Hometown: Zwingle, Iowa NFR Qualifications: 7 (2014-20)
“I plan to be the world champion next year. We don’t have a rodeo basically until April, but I’m hoping to win all of them. I plan to go into the NFR next year at a point where they can’t take it (the No. 1 position) away fromme. I haven’t watched the 2020 NFR videos yet for pretty fair reasons, but eventually I will have to and see what I need to improve on, but 2020 was probably my best year yet. It was a very interesting Finals. This year, I just plan on bettering myself as a father, as a husband and as a bareback rider. Those are my main things, and they keep me very busy. I would like the way I present myself as a godly man to bring others closer, and those four things, if done right, will take up my 2021. “I’ve never won Houston before, and I don’t know if we will have Calgary or not, but I would like to win Calgary. I’ve wonThe American in the past and would love to win it again now that it counts.”
